I've been thinking about making a knife/tool sharpening jig for a while now, and I have all plans for it stuck in my mind. I intend to make a guide on making the jig too. But when I went to the local hardware store this morning, I had no idea what a particular joint was called haha.

I ended up coming back empty handed :(

anyway, the joint I want to know the name of is something like the one used in this jig.

That joint at the top, centre'ish. The one that holds the two metal rods together, but allows the sharpening rod to pivot up/down and left/right etc. Its also used in this youtube vid, if you want to see it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB0pNsI1mZY&feature=player_embedded

a variation of the joint is also used in the edge pro apex.

haha, i just don't know what its called :X any help would be much appreciated.

It would be called a pivot block or a swivel block.
You make one by drilling out some bar stock. I don't think you can buy one at a hardware store. UHMW would be a good material choice.

UHMW would be a great material

You should be able t buy it in wood working shops as material for jigs

In Canada I would try http://www.leevalley.com/us/hardware/page.aspx?c=&p=32045&cat=3,43576,43581

in US ?

I've also seen people setup the same jig using a female rod end and a vertical threaded rod.
But I think the design you showed is a nice one.

I've never heard the term for that piece, but Stacey's terms sound reasonable.

I would take that picture down to ye ol' machine shop and kindly ask them to make me one.

Maybe the easiest way would be to call Ben at EdgePro and ask if he would send you one.

They do look pretty easy to make. I would certainly make my own with a drill press with a vice.

That first pic you showed looks like you could recreate it with 2 bosshead clamps from a chem lab.
