Question about recon scout handle removal

I've seen a number of threads where the recon scout/ trailmaster handles have been removed, but it always seems like they had to be destroyed. Is it possible to drill out the lanyard tube and slide the rubber handle off without having to cut it in half?

drill out the tube first , and slide the rubber handle off the tang , it is very easy .
