Question about regrinds and edge maintenance

So I'm getting a Spydie Gayle Bradley (again) and I want to have the edge reground. However, all I have for sharpening is a Sharpmaker, so obviously I am limited to the preset angles.

If I have it reground to 18-20 degrees inclusive, would it be reasonable to expect that I could maintain it by putting a 30 degree microbevel on it with the Sharpmaker?

Hi Dookie, yes you could put a microbevel on it and it will work. In the long run though, after lots of touching up on your microbevel, it will have become so wide, that your bevel will effectively be a 30 degree edge.

You can use your Sharpmaker rods free hand to maintain the bevel. Some flip the base and use the slots in the bottom, but I prefer to use the top storage slots in the top of the base for this.

Regrinding PM-M4 with the stock rods should only take a few weeks. It would be wise to have this primary re-bevel done if you are not going to buy more equipment, but maintaining it with what you have is do-able.
