Question about restonewashing a blade

Hi guys. I have a Chris reeve nyala that has a lot of very noticeable fine scratches on the blade from a dirty sheath. I am considering restonewashing it myself. My question is do I need to sand the existing scratches out before stone washing? Or do I just go ahead and do it without removing them first?
