hi you all and okc
when rtak2 switch to 5160 steel
and how to differentiate 1095 and 5160 steel versions by appearance?

Dingy, theres no easy way to tell the difference
by appearance, however Ontario states that they
changed the grind on 5160 models, but if you have
the cardboard blade cover that the knife originally
shipped with, it has the date of mfg. stamped on it,
after nov. 2011 is 5160

So what would be "Better" steel then?

Which one has a better RW hardness?

Was looking at a BK-9, SP-5 and the ONTARIO RAT RTAK II KNIFE...if I don't get that SP-53 but with an SP-51 already I think I can wait for that one. But I like atleast 2 of the same knives that do similar duties.

Edit: I should of stated what would be better for a good general purpose large bowie now steel wise. 1095 or 51560. I do plan for that SP-53 yet besides my SP-51 so I got the heavy chopping and botaning covered. I'm thinking one good for baotonning and one for genera use for a big bowie for canoe trips and such.

OK found on another forum in the OKC section that 5160 steel was said to be tougher. So RTAC 2 just moved to top of the list!

Hey Roguer,

We didn't see this until today (we've been at SHOT Show). 5160 is generally considered to be an upgrade. It's a spring steel, so it's tougher just by nature of having a bit of flex to it. The rockwell is probably the same or similar for both versions of the blade after heat treat.

Hey thanks! I figured looking about the OKC sections I'd find my answer. Thanks for the reconfirmation! :D
