I know not all sanding belt are the same and there are ones out there that work better for metal griding then others. What I'd like to know is what kind are the top to get and where can you get them at?

I can only find places that I have to buy 10 of the same grit and thats going to be a lot of money. Also that brings up how many diffrent grit's do you use on your knife when making them?

Might want to add I'm looking for 2 x 27

If your last belt size number is supposed to be 72 instead of 27, I would reccomend; http://www.popsknifesupplies.com
They handle good quality products, are competetive and nice to talk to.

Some standards would be 50grit 120grit 400grit. This combination of belts will get you started. Buy the best belts you can afford. Especially in the bigger grits.[36&50grit]

Good luck, Fred

Thanks right now all I got is the 2 x 27 but I'm looking to buy a 4 x 36 some time soon.

Realistically, you might want to avoid the 4 x 36. I have 2 and they aren't very good to work with. They are ok for handle material, but not so good for metal.

I would save the $ and get at the very least a 2x48 or preferably a 2 x 72.

My reasoning:

2x48 and 2x72 belts are more readily available in better belts and more grits.

The 4x36 will bounce your steel around a lot due to the seam in the belt. even better belts will have the bounce.

You will likely need to get a ceramic 'platen' liner for your belt to ride on. If you choose to get a 4 x (platen length) piece, it's pretty expensive.

If you want to grind curves, you will be grinding directly on an aluminum wheel, this wheel seem s to get divots in it from this.

I hope this helps.

ive heard good things about those trizact belts, they make those to custom specs also if you want. i think most companies can make any length you want
