Question about Satin Jack sheath...

The UPS truck recently dropped of a new Satin Jack. It seems like a rugged utility knife. My question about the sheath, why the snap tab on a long string? I can see it would be easy to use the sheath without a retaining device, but as a retaining device, the tab on a string seem pretty lame.

Thanks,
Rich

I dunno about 'lame', but when Im looking for info its usually a good idea to leave out comments like that..

mogmz, are you the "PC" monitor?

The snap on the string looks to me like lame way to
try and retain the knife. I've never seen anything
like it on another sheath, including a BM-E.

I AM THE PROTECTOR OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY

I admit it is a 'different' method of retaining a knife. Only ones opinion can justify good/bad. *shrug*

Rich, Welcome to the Busse forum. The "tab on cord" retaining strap has been used by Busse for more than 10 years. It allows for single strap, wrap strap, etc...For those who venture deep into heavy bush, having the ability to double wrap the handle with the retaining strap can prove to be very advantageous. Some folks love it, and some are not crazy about it.

As for Mogmz comments, we all try to keep an eye on it around here in order to keep anything from getting out of hand. We do have an open forum but strive to retain a certain level of decorum. Comments made on the internet can easily be misinterpreted as being more aggressive than they may have been originally intended. We certainly don't mind questions, and are more than willing to answer any and all. If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, please contact me off-line and we will get you taken care of at, jerry@bussecombat.com

Hi Jerry,

Given the retaining tab and string system is unusual,
IMHO, it might save you and your customers problems
if you showed the sheaths that come with your knives.

A strap like the one that comes on the BM-E, that
can be reomved, is a much better design.

Sorry if you are offended by the term "lame" but
that was a pretty mild word for what I think of the
retainer on the SG CG sheath.

I did send you an email, per your request, about
the thickness of the SG CG aprox. 4pm PDT.

Sincerely,
Rich

Rich,

I'm not offended by word "lame". In fact I use it quite often when describing Guinness beer! ;) The only concern is that on the internet it could elicit some aggressive responses from others which, in turn, could quickly end up turning into a bonfire.

As for the sheath issue, we have finally come up with a solution to what is a problem for every knife manufacturer. That will be announced with the introduction of the new line.

I'll check my email and get back with you later today concerning the SJ issue.

Thanks,

Jerry

Can't wait to see what the sheath solution is!

Let me see??

1. Get your choice of several differnt sheath options.

or

2. All knives come with out sheath and a directory of forum members who make sheaths

or

3. ALl THE NEW KNIVES ARE FOLDERS AND DO NOT REQUIRE SHEATHS!!!!!!!!!!!

Darn it Ranger! Turn that sattelite camera off!!!

I should have my office ceiling lined in lead by next week. That should take care of your office spying activities. Of course, I've been told by those in the know that that was the "Real" reason that lead-based paints were discontinued!!!! Think about it. . how many kids do you know who actually pulled paint off of the walls and ate it?? . . . . Okay, I'll admit to a few paint chip sandwiches with a little mustard on Wonder bread. . . . but I didn't eat buckets of it. . . . at least not large buckets!

Hi Rich,
I have a Satin Jack that came with a standard type retention strap if you want to stay with the cordura/kydex stock sheath. Theres several good kydex sheath makers here as well, I wont name names cause I WILL forget one! lol! :D There are also a bunch of good leather craftsmen here as well (erm, guess what I do for a living!) ;)

Send me a note if you want to discuss sheaths, kydex, cordura, leather, leather, leather, ahem! :o armoralleather@yahoo.com

I have an Eagle Industries cordura/kydex sheath for my Machaxe with that cord/tab type retention, and it seems to be a LOT more secure than the stock strap. It holds very tight and can be adjusted as the cord gets loose. Its just something different, I like different, different is good!:D ;) Right Gundy?!:footinmou

Hmmmm. It seems that mine is not the only sattelite vid link directly to Jerry's office. That's disappointing.:grumpy:

Holy Cow! The guys at Carling's are gonna be torqued! Jerry gave away the secret recipe! :D

Well...actually it's been a couple of weeks now.

For what it's worth...

The person (I forget her name - I'm married - it's ok to forget girls names now) who received my order was very polite and knowledgable. I requested for her to have my initials and last four added to the knife so I wouldn't muck it up w/ a dremel or an engraver. She did - it looks great.

When the knife arrived I opened the box...trumpets sounded, doves flew, a york peppermint pattie sensation coarsed through my....ok ok that's a little dramatic....but it was a very neat treat. Of course the box the knife arrived in was carved up in good order with the new tool. I liked it, my wife liked it, and my sons liked it....so it's definately a hit in my casa.

As for the sheath...I expected a form fitted like kevlar sheath (eg like a Mad Dog or a leather sheath like a Chris Reeves). The sheath that came with the knife is well made - kevlar lined (?) and has velcro and grommets for a variety of carries. I'm satisfied with it as well. The sheath will mount easily to a pack frame or to 782 gear in a variety of ways. I guess you could carry it on a belt while in the woods surviving but I wouldn't carry it for everyday use. However, if you did decide to carry it, then the velcro affords easy belt removal without taking off your trousers prior to sitting at a poker table. To sum it up, the sheath didn't meet my preconceived notions as to looks, but met all of my expectations for a rugged dependable 'knife carrier.' After all, that's what a sheath is for...

Anyways, just my two cents...

v/r,
L.W.

PS Jerry Busse's interaction on this board really influenced my purchase of this knife. It's neat to have a craftsman interact with the public. The Busse knife line has a great reputation by it's performance and warranty. The company namesake and co-workers have a great reputation by forums like these and their customer service.

LW, just FYI the inserts and sheaths you mentioned are made of kydex...not kevlar. Kevlar is used in a very select few sheaths, however ;) :D

Funky looking yellow stuff, that kevlar, from my experience . . .

When I get some Busses of my own, I might just get some sheathes with summa dat in it . . .

"Oh & Friday is flaming sheath day so if you want to wear a flaming sheath & jeans umm thats ok".
