Hello all. This is my first post so I hope you will forgive me if its in the wrong forum. I am about to stabilize three sets of scales using minwax wood hardener. Well, I'm going to attempt it anyway.:D I read on the net that you can stabilize scales by heating the hardener in a mason jar sitting in a pot of boiling water. When the hardener is hot the mason jar should be sealed with the scales inside. When the hardener cools the vaccum in the jar will further draw the hardener into the scales. Then you let it sit for about a week. Anyone know of a better or different stabilization method for us do-it-yourselfers? I was thinking of sealing all three scale sets in the same jar. What do you all think?

It is a noble experiment but the Minwax Wood Hardener evaporates so fast that you will be lucky if there is anything left by the time it gets hot enough to create a vacuum in the jar. Also, don't do this in your house! If you want to try doing this, go to the Salvation Army store and buy a crock pot and do it in your driveway.

If you do it in your house, you will peel the paint off the walls or blow yourself out a window. In theory, it's great, in reality this is a very dangerous combination.

As difficult as it is, try to use a vacuum pump. I have a small vacuum pump hooked up to a Mason jar and as you create the vacuum you can see the bubbles come out of the wood.

Good luck but be careful.
