Question about Sebenza scales

Hey all,

I bought a small plain regular Sebenza, dated 10/2001 last week. I ordered a new clip for it, as the clip that my knife came with seemed to be loose. I also ordered a clip insert.

At any rate, the clip and the clip insert are a much brighter shade of grey than my Sebenza. Has the process for finishing the scales changed over the past 2 years? I have a hard time believing that it could be due to use, as the contrast is quite drastic!

Thanks for your help,

Matthew

It's weird, I've seen pics of Sebbeis in which the shades of grade are completely different. Here are some examples:

My two Sebbies have DOBs of 7/99 and 6/02 and their scales appear to have near identical shades.

Matthew,

The small solar wind Sebbie that I bought from you a while back has the same "tint" of grey (well, the lock-side scale is since the front has the CGG on it) as my large plain Sebbie that was brand new when I bought it back in Feb.

Perhaps the new clip and clip insert haven't been used enough yet? My large Sebbie got a little darker the more I handled it. However, as I was using some Windex to clean the blade, I got some on the scales and I could tell that the spot I touched with the Windex got quite a bit lighter than the rest of the knife. That might not be the case with your clip and clip insert, but it could be a possibility.

Hope that helps,

Randy

I just ordered a clip insert last night for my knife. I hope the shade of grey matches the knife or at least will with some wear. If they are VERY different shades and it sticks out, it kind of takes away the whole purpose of the inserts doesn't it? :o

The matte surface of the titanium will trap and retain the oils from your hand, resulting in a darker appearance. Also, the aluminum oxide media used to beadblast the finish into the titanium breaks down and the matte finish becomes finer over the course of the lifetime of the media. The variance in surface roughness can give the appearance of different shades of grey as the light is refracted more or less.

Indeed, I had to rub my clip-insert with my fingers and used some militec-1 on it before it matched the color of my scales.

There ya go, thats what I wanted to hear! :) I just wanted to know if it was easily possible to get them to match. Thanks

I think I remember CRK posting a ways back about using Windex to the Ti from oils and the like. This procedure might be a good sarting point in getting things to match up.

Wow, thanks all for the replies. Didn't expect to get quite this much help so soon!

At any rate, sounds like I am experiencing a difference in wear between the new and the old, so I better get to rubbing :footinmou :)

Thanks again,

Matthew
