Question about sharpening with stones

This may be a dumb question but here it goes. When you sharpen with stones do you push into the stone like shaving it, or do you pull the blade backwards?:confused:
 
If you're sharpening a regular v-grind, push the blade edge-first, as if you were slicing off a small piece of stone.

I think if you're hogging off a lot of metal on a coarse stone, prior to doing the actual sharpening, then it doesn't matter which direction you go at that point.

Yes, just use whatever is most comfortable. For actually sharpening the edge itself edge-into is usually the best option for burr minimization and micro-teeth formation, but Hob has noted edge trailed to be necessary on some softer japanese waterstones.

I don't disagree with Cliff on burr formation, but for me it is more important to use the grip and motion that can provide the most consistent stroke angle and pressure, whether it be edge first or trailing.
