question about sharpening

hey guys, i was wondering if when you sharpen a knife like a scandi, do you actually move the grind higher and higher every time you sharpen? or does the grind just get more acute? i know it might sound like a silly question, but i don't want to sharpen the wrong way, and eventually ruin the original look of the knife/grind. thanks for any help.

On a scandi grind, you lay the bevel flat on the stone to sharpen, so the top of the bevel will get a little closer to the spine each time, but it will take a lot of sharpenings to be noticable. The alternative would be to use a secondary and less acute bevel at the edge, essentially making the scandi grind into a low saber grind.

that is what i was looking for. i want to keep the scandi, but hoping this wouldn't happen for many years? will i really be able to notice in the future? thanks

as long as you don't do any serious damage that needs to be ground out, it will probably take more than 100 touchups before you might think you notice a difference.

the biggest difference that i notice, after about a year with my heavily used scandis, is that at the very base of the blade you can see where the edge has moved back, since there is no choil you don't sharpen the first 1/16" or so, and it stays while the rest of the edge is sharpened back.

your being able to see the grind move will depend on how often you sharpen and how much metal you remove each time.
