If I buy a knife from an individual in Australia, does it come straight to me, or does it go through customs and am I charged a fee based on the value?

It will most likely go through customs. And the "duty" will be based on the value, and the type of item. Different items have different rates. For example, electronics have one duty, and clothes have another.

I'm not sure what the duty is for sporting goods vs kitchen cutlery. Might be worth looking into if the value is high.

It will come to you after it goes through Customs, and if they charge you a bill will likely accompany it, although the bill may show up later. You may or may not get charged a duty. It's pretty hit and miss. I've bought several things from overseas, and only once that I can remember was I charged the duty. I know other people that got hit with duty more often than not.

I'm no expert but and since you posted here then it is a Busse....

I think if the knife was made here there are not going to be import duties, well because you are not importing anything. The seller is going to (I hope) put the USA as the country of origin. Oh what the hell I’m home sick I’ll just look it up.

Question

Is duty required on U.S. made goods returning and imported into the U.S.?

Answer

U.S. made goods returning to the United States are usually eligible for duty-free treatment. The provision 9801.00.10 in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) allows U.S. made products to return to the U.S. without duty requirements. However, the provision stipulates the goods value could not have been advanced nor the condition improved while abroad. In other words, if an item was repaired or improved, duty could be owed on either the fair market value of the labor or the item as it has been changed.
For instance, if you take gold to India, where is is made into jewelry, the gold can not be re-entered into the U.S. free of charge. Nor is the value of the gold deductable from the value of the finished jewelry. To claim goods under this provision, proof of U.S. origin is required (i.e., country of origin marking or a certificate of origin from manufacture).

So unless it was modified out of country to add value... (never happens with a Busse:foot:) there should be no import duty.

I have purchased a few times and never charged a duty, I think it doesn't kick in until at least $800. The package will come to you after Customs, it would take about two weeks depending of course how it was shipped. I always pay extra for the expedited service, it seems to have less problems.

It is a Busse FBMLE I am talking about. Sounds like I dodged a bullet on that one. Thanks, guys.

Ive never been charged duty from out of country but I guess thats for reasons TonyG researched for us. Good to know though. Thanx T.
