Question about sodbusters and pocket carry

I have a question about sodbusters. I really love the look and style of these knives, but I was wondering about one characteristic of sodbusters: the way the corner of the blade sticks out when in the closed position. I'm not sure if it's actually a problem or not for people who carry them. I like to pocket carry my knives in my right front pants pocket, so I wanted to know if a sodbuster has ever been uncomfortable or shredded your pocket up? I'm mostly concerned for my pockets... which have indeed been shredded up by certain knife designs in the past. Thanks for any input.

I have a Case sodbuster jr that i edc periodically and I haven't had any problems with it shredding my pockets or getting caught on anything, normally I slide mine in the fob pocket and i never have problems. Hope this helps

I have carried a sodbuster of some type off and on for years. While I have had problems with other knives shredding up my pockets, the sodbuster never has.

Thanks for the responses! I had another questions I forgot to ask. Is it true that sodbusters have pretty strong tension in the spring and are fairly hard to open/close? (I consider that a good thing)

Some have a stronger pull than others. The hardest pull knives I've handled are the GEC knives. It ranges from a 4 to a 9. Some are almost nail breakers.

The base sodbuster pattern has been around and essentially unchanged for well over a century. You'll be fine. :)

I've seen infinitely more pockets killed by clips than blade run ups.

And you can stone or file (lightly) that corner to a less catchy state...some are sharper than others and I have resorted to this although pockets did not seem to care...Herb

I don't have a problem with it. I think it's because the sodbuster is so light that there's not enough weight behind it to shred a pocket.

Pull tension is strong on the Case and uncomfortably strong on a GEC. The Case version has enough blade exposed that you can pinch the blade instead of using the nail nick, so the strong pull is less of an issue.

It does not bother me.

I carry a large sodbuster. I took the "bite" off the top edge and corners of mine. Just a bit. You can't really tell by looking, unless I tell you I did it.

The tang is not noticeable in the pocket, and when in use, the tang is flush against the spring, so it does not matter to me at all.

A sunken tang is more important to me on multi bladed knives. But, apparently, I can live with that too, because all my multi blade slip joints have high tangs, except one canoe/gunboat.

Never seen those before Mumbojumboo. What does that gain you? I've never had problems with my sodbusters tearing pockets, got a large case workman in my right front pocket now.

I've got Sodbuster style knives from several companies. The current favorite is GEC called "Bull Nose" and bladed in some very nice O-1. Worst would be from Bear & Son Cutlery. Case, Eye Brand, and Queen are all good. Kissing crane in carbon steel is surprisingly good for the price. The large Brown Mule is a bunch of knife for the money.

I'm still angry about the Bear & Sons soddie I got and it's been 3 years now haha! Thing came with a scale that was falling off, horrible f&f, an uneven grind, and worst of all THE BLADE CAME BENT. As in a 10 degree bend right in the middle of the blade. How does that even happen?!

My God, they are all so beautiful. GEC in orange Delrin and O1! Case in Yellow Delrin and CV! Queen in Yellow Delrin and D2! Must... resist... temptation... to... buy.

Mine has a strong pull, locks up very solid, and keeps a great edge: KR Johnson sodbuster. No problems at all for my with how it rides in the pockets--it's very smooth.

It kind of makes one wonder.

Mine was just extremely loose and the blade wobbles around. Not like the tight, straight blades from the other companies. Even the Kissing Crane at under $15 ( when I bought it) was tight and straight. That Bullnose in O-1 is special though. O-1 in a slippie style thin blade sure likes to cut and slice. It sure takes a nice edge. I like it better than 1095 and think it takes thinner, stronger edges with maybe slightly less wear. It could very well be my imagination though. :)

I am not an expert, but I do have a couple of sodbuster knives, old and new, and I think what you are concerened about is really a non issue.
