Question about SOG Seal 2000/Seal Knife/Seal Team

Hi all,

I have had my SOG Seal Knife for about a year now. At first I thought it was too big but after a while it really grew on me and now it is the blade I reach for most around the house, yard, and when out in the woods at night.

My question is, my knife says on it "Seal Knife" under the Logo. I know it is not the Japan made Seal 2000. It looks exactly like pics of the version that says "Seal Team" under the logo. I bought it from what seemed like a reputable dealer for what I consider to be at the low end of street price (here: http://www.sog-knives.net/sog-knife.php?prodnum=S37-N).

My worry is of course that it is a counter fit that I paid full price for. Another option I came up with in my own paranoid brain would be that it is a different iteration between the 2000 knife and the Team knife. I own 5 other SOGs. I Will be a life long customer and keep this knife no matter how this turns out. The knife feels just so damn good to use. This Seal Knife has the exact fit and finish I would expect from SOG and that I have seen in my other SOG knives. The sheath is exactly what the Seal pup has for a nylon sheath, except the differences out lined by SOG and countless reviews (IE, big bro has velcro and no snap on the retention). If it is a counter fit, it is indistinguishable and SOG should be very worried. Whatever is going on, I would just like to know.

I spent a couple hours researching this on the web but have yet to find an answer. Hopefully someone here will have a first and knowledge of this issue with some solid links. I don't really need speculation on this so please keep any non-evidence based guess work to a minimum (I do my own paranoid speculation quite well). Perhaps a response from Chris would be in order?

It's not a counterfeit. They're no longer being made in Seki. SOG is cutting corners. I have a SEAL Team Elite and a SOG Tech Bowie that are both marked Taiwan.

Right, I know they are not being made in Japan anymore (I have 5 SOGs that I all really like). I know mine is the newer version made in Taiwan. My question is, why does mine say "Seal Knife" and not "Seal Team". When you look on SOGs webpage the non-Elite Seal Team says " Seal Team" in one picture but then nothing in another. Most photos you find on the web say "Seal Team". Why does mine, which does not seem like a knock-off at all, say "Seal Knife" when for all intents and purposes it should say "Seal Team". Does that make sense?

Just going over hundreds of photos I can see lots do say Seal Knife, some say Seal Team (no elite), and some say nothing.

Maybe I'm mis-reading the question or I could just be wrong but I thought the difference between the modern Seal Knife 2000 in AUS8 (Oposed to the original AUS6 / 440a) and the Elite is the absence of the saw teeth on the spine of the blade. The Seal Team Elite and the Seal Pup Elite all have the saw teeth on the spine of the blade.

So, the Seal Knife no saw teeth on the Spine. Seal Team Elite Saw teeth on the spine.

Like I said I could be wrong depending on how I'm reading your question but if the question is why one says "Seal Knife" and another "Seal Team" that is the answer. They are two different versions of the same knife.

Either way, you should e-mail Chris@Sog directly. If he doesn't know he will find out and get back to you.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you are reading it wrong. Leave any "Elite" knives out of this. I have seen some modern Seal knives (IE the AUS8 made in Taiwan) say "Seal Team" and others say "Seal Knife". I have decided mine is not a fake from my own research. There most have been two runs or something.

OK, but I thought the Seal Team is the "Elite" series? Even if it doesn't say Elite after on the blade. That is what my observation was based on. The ones that say Seal Team, do they have the saw teeth on the spine? Either way I don't think you have a fake. Did you reach out to Chris? If nothing else he would know the whole deal. He's good about returning e-mails.

Now you have me curious about it. Please post if and when you get to the bottom of it.

Good luck!

Ok, I have to correct myself. My research has found that they are three versions of the knife:

Seal Knife 2000 (Original)
Seal Team (New version of the Seal Knife)
Seal Team Elite (Seal Team with the saw teeth on the spine)

All are legitimate Sog Seal series knives and have different markings on the blade to denote the version.
