My son recently found a Solingen knife on his way to school. It is a folding knife, silver in color and has some dogs on it. Does anyone know anything about it? I mean if it's old, then I'd like to put an ad in the paper and try to find it's owner. However, if it's just a WalMart knife, I'll let him keep it. Thanks.

Solingen is a town in Germany where many knife companies reside. It is anot a company name, hene the question from other members.

Welcome to the forum, by the way :)

okay, so what you're saying is that the blades were probably manufacturer there, but the rest could have been made anywhere.

No, the knife was made in Solingen, Germany; but there are a number of companies that make knives in Solingen, many of which stamp their blades "Solingen" as a sign of quality.

Some of the better-known brands from Solingen are Bulldog, Hen & Rooster, Boker or Tree Brand, Fight'in Rooster, and Carl Schlieper or Eye Brand.
If the blade is marked "Solingen", it's not a cheap Wal*Mart knife. New, it cost the owner $40-$100+, depending on brand, age, design and materials.

If you can post a picture of it (cell phone picture could do), I'm sure we could help identify it.

Solingen is just a town in German where lots of cutlery is made. Without a brand name you'll probably never know who made it. There are/were hundreds of makers that operated in that area over the years.

The Boker model has a full profile of a pointer type dog on it, in an oval. Outside of the oval is a vine pattern. It has a large blade on one end and a small blade on the other.

Your best bet is to list the knife and the area it was found in. An ad like "Knife with Dogs on it found on xyz street" should be fine. The person who lost the knife should be able to accurately descride the knife, and the ad doesn't include enough details to tip off a less than honest person that might want a free knife.
