I recently bought the Chive and am VERY satisfied with it. I open and close it almost every night. But my concern is, how long will this torsion bar last? What is it made of? Thanks.

Kershaw comes with a life time warrenty, so if the spring does ware out, send it back for a fix. more than likely they'll give you a new one. Im not too sure what the thing is made of though...

Spring steel. If you want the specific steel you may email Ken and he'll tell you.

There have been only a few reports of spring failure. If it was a problem you would hear it here first.

In the event of an eventual failure, Kershaw backs it for life. The little L-shaped torsion bar probably costs no more than a buck and I'm sure Kershaw has a more than an adaquate supply. They've staked alot of their reputation on the Speed-Safe opener and I doubt if they would take chances with it's long-term viability.

Don't worry about it.

My girlfriend's been using her Blackout daily for over a year now with no problems. I've had a Chive in my watch pocket for just as long with regular use--also no problems. Frankly, I expect we'll replace them for reasons of personal taste long before anything breaks or wears out.

Ive only known of one ever failing, kershaw's warranty is wonderful though!

I own many spped safes (19 or so) and have never had any problems, I only use 5 of them though (regularly).

My edc for about the past year has been the Avalanche (love it and use it lots). Recently, I noticed the torsion spring was rattling a bit. Whether recommended or not (perhaps it voids the warranty, I don't know), I disassembled the knive. I was interested to find that the spring is housed in a recess on the backside of the G10 handles and held in place by the liner. Anyway, that recess is packed with grease. On my knife, through heavy use, the spring had pushed the grease to the sides of the recess and, as a result, the spring would rattle from time to time. I regreased the recess, reassembled the knife, and no more rattle. But more in response to your original post, I saw no signs of wear whatsoever. In fact, given the ingeniously simple SpeedSafe design (which I now wish I had sketched), I really don't expect it to fail, in my lifetime anyway.

hmmmm...thats interesting!!! Ive had th erattle in mine for the last year, or so! I'll have to try that!!!! thanks!!! :)

The only time it will "rattle" is when the blade is on the open position. There is no tension on the torsion bar in the open position and a slight rattle might occur.

With the blade in the closed position, you should not detect any rattle whatsoever. This is normal and is not an indication of a problem.;)

I opened/closed my whrilwind for hours on end. I have flicked it open at least 10,000. And is as good as new

my blackout has broken twice within a year and a half, the 2nd time with very little use from when i got it back from when it broke the first time. i havn't got around to sending it back again.

The torsion bar on my Chive broke about three months after I got it, and I didn't ship it back for about six months, but when I did I got it back within a week. It's lasted since then, and I wouldn't hesitate to ship it back again if it broke again.
