This has most likely been brought up before.

But I just had a questions about the next generation series from ka bar.

Right now, on their site they say they are using 440 stainless in the next gen series.

Back a few years ago they were using 1090 steel in their next gen.

The 440 looks like it's cheaper.

Are the steels pretty much the same?

I want to get a next gen ka bar... should i look for the old 1090 series or is the 440 gonna be alright?

Advantages/disadvantages for either?

Thanks

I thought they were originaly using D2 in their next generation fighter. I've never heard of kabar using 1090. Their standard line is 1095 which is far cheaper than any 440 series stainless.

Your right... the old style ka bar next gen used 1095.

Here is the official statement from an old catalog:

"High carbon, high chromium, fine grained cold rolled stainless steel, hardened to HRC 56-58m cryogenically treated to -120 degrees F for maxiumum hardness and corrosion resistance, and double-draw tempered."

Honestly... the only thing I understood was "stainless steel" the rest doesn't compute.

Here is the steel nowadays:

Which is better?
