Hi all, I would like to know the purpose for the hole in the blade on a survival knife like the one in the picture. What are its uses? Thanks

That thing is a piece of junk. It is probably a hole to use with the sheath as a wire cutter.

I've seen the ones with the wire cutter, but I have also seen many other knives that have the hole but don't come with a sheath with the attachment. I was wondering if there was other uses for it.

Every time I have seen knives like that, they are used to make up a wirecutter, as Smash said. Other than that, I don't know.

Do you ask out of sheer curiosity, or are you on the hunt for a good wilderness blade? If it's the latter, stop by the Wilderness & Survival Skills subforum sometime, there's lots of good advice there.

I ask because my LanCay M9 has the hole, but also has a wire cutter on the sheath, but I have seen a lot of other knives that also have the hole but nothing for cutting on the sheath. My neighbor bought a jeep knive from big5 and it has the hole so, but no cutter so I was wondering

If it's not an M9 and it's one of those cheap(er), hollow handled "survival" knives, then it's just a hole. Just a useless hole that does absolutely nothing--well, nothing I can think of.

Looking at the blade style, it seems to be patterned after an M9 (which I think you may have stated). So that's more than likely the reason the hole is there.

Unless you want it for a conversation piece, DO. NOT. ORDER. THAT. KNIFE.

ETA: I just followed the pic link. That knife is one of those hollow handled "jungle survival" knives, that alot of places pawn off on people. Yeah, the hole's useless. I even tried to work it out as a slingshot and couldn't figure out how you could do it effectively.

It is pure knock-off emulation without understanding what the purpose is for.

The blade pattern was copied from the M-9 bayonet but the sheath is a cheapo-special so there isn't any real function.

so basically its there for pure show? i have a Lan Cay m-9 and i and i just wanted to know if there were other uses other than a wire cutter..

that's pretty much it, amigo.
It's there, as far as I can tell, because the thing is an M9 knock-off. Purely aesthetic...like the rest of the knife.

They are to use as wrench for cleaves clovis nuts. Or whatever you call those do hicky thing a ma bobs on humvees and offroad trucks

Weight reduction hole. Designed and engineered for perfect balance. :D

The manufacturer copied it off another knife, but didn't know why.

If it is on a bayonet and has square sides in the hole, it is most likely a wrench to whatever gun it mounts on. It may remove the muzzle flash or be used in disassembly.

from years of looking at tons of el chepo knife catalogs, it's fair to say that the bulk of far eastern knife manufacturers have a neck of producing knives which utilizes mismatched leftover parts and come up with some vaguely familiar hybrid type products; much as dr. frankenstein would put togather just to see if it can be done...

Could someone tell me how that wirecutter works, I've never figured that out.. I mean, how the hell do you get the wire IN that hole? Say if you go commando and have to cut some barb wire..

Wire doesnt go IN the hole. A lug on the sheath goes through the hole, then you use the back side of the blade and a part of the sheath as shears.
