Question about Talon sheathes

I'd like to hear your experiences with Talon sheathes. I have a
Talonite Talon who's sheath is not very secure. I e-mailed Camillus, and being the excellent customer service folks that they are :D, they told me to send in my sheath and they'd replace it. I got back my Talon sheath in yesterday's mail and the replacement sheath is just as loose as the original. :( Now, I'd think that this is just the way it is except for the fact that I have a part serrated 154CM Talon and it's sheath is as tight as a drum (really good fit). The 154CM Talon's sheath is also loose on my Talonite Talon.

Is there more variation in actual blade shape among the talonite Talons that might account for this issue? I'm at a loss as to how to deal with this. I could bother Camillus some more but short of making a new sheath to my specific Talonite Talon, I don't know what they could do. Am I stuck having to send off my blade and get a private entity to make me a custom sheath (which I'd rather not)?

Let's hear some sage advice. Thank you very much.

Maybe I need to post this question in the general forum. Don't tell me I'm the only one to have encountered this... :(

Nobody,
That problem has been discussed in the past. If you feel comfortable doing it, you can try heating the kydex up with a hair dryer and give it a slight reshaping to make the hold better. If not, by all means, call Camillus back and see what they suggest.

Thanks. I'd researched the past threads but all I found as a solution was to get a replacement sheath from Camillus, which I tried and id didn't work for me but it seemed to work for others. I was more interested if it's worth trying a second time or whether my efforts would be better spent on another solution. Hmmm....

Call them back and tell them they still have not got it right, and to fix it. You sure they did not accidently send your same sheath back to you? Would not be the first time, things got mixed up.

Only other option is to have someone else make you a custom kydex sheath to your liking.

A strategically placed fastener, ala bolt and nut will solve the problem but good. There were previous posts on this that a search my pick up. A brass screw, flatwasher, lockwasher and nut will end this situation.

I have a very early talon

sheath was very loose, the replacement is better but is not super secure. oh well

I received the replacement sheath too and it is much better than the old one.... I am quite happy with it.

Use the hair dryer as Cheryl said!!!!
I did that on my sheath that was also loose although I had to tweak it a little and tighten the sheath at the bottom so it holds the blade tighter, fixed it right up.
I did the heat work on the back side of the sheath at the top where the handle snaps in at first so as to not mess up the looks on the front.
I think it's easier to heat the kydex towards the bottom of the sheath and then gently squeeze it together just a little bit which was the extent of my tweaking.
The kydex will of course mark the blade finish a little, but that didn't bother me. YMMV.
To be on the safe side fill the bathroom or kitchen sink with some cold water to "set" the warm kydex up solid as quickly as possible.
It doesn't hardly take any time at all to get the kydex warm enough to shape and it's much easier than what you might think.

My Talon is one of the 154 CM Stainless models and there were some minor problems with a few of us getting a sheath that wasn't real secure.
Some sent the sheaths back in and some fixed them like this. Doing it this way sure saves having to send your knife back in though.:)

Nobody,
We will be glad to supply you with another sheath. But, what probally will happen is that you are looking for a higher level of retention that we are able to supply with a mass produced sheath, for a knife of this configuration. With the TALON, there isn't a pronounced guard for the kydex to easily grab to...

Tell you what, if you feel like trying to modify you sheath, using a hairdryer or heat gun[on low heat], go ahead. You will be able to "tweak" the sheath to suit you better. That is usually what I do with all my personal kydex. Since you ahve already recieved a second sheath from us, if something goes wrong with your modifications, and you aren't happy still, I'll replace you sheath eventhough you have modified it.

I'm making this offer, to ensure that you get a sheath that you are happy with, and also because I have confidence that you will be able to easily modify the existing sheath. Working kydex is really pretty easy. I think that one of the advantages of kydex is that is is user adjustable. Just go slow, and son't get it too hot. You don't want it to get hot enought to turn "shiny looking".

To everyone else reading this...don't get crazy with your kydex sheaths! I'm making this offer to Nobody, because of his situation, not to the general knifenut public:rolleyes: But feel freee to contact me if you have any problems.

I'm pretty handy with craftsmanship. I'll try the hair dryer suggestion and go slow to see if that will fix my problem. I just thought it was really odd how the 154CM Talon fits really tightly in it's sheath whereas my Talonite Talon does not fit tightly at all and does not have a degree of retention with which I'm happy. I'll let you all know the results when I get a chance to do this. First, I've got to repair the blasted lawnmower! :(
