How long has Spyderco been using this box design? I thought that it was new for 2002, but here it is with a plain-edge rescue that has been discontinued for a while.

Thanks,

Jeff

When did u get the rescue? Where did u get the knife?Maybe the box relabelled for the rescue if you bought from somebody recently.

A batch of new-old-stock plain-edge rescues were released to market about a month or two ago. They are all in current boxes I believe.

Carlos: so these boxes have only been used in 2002?(regardless of what's in them)

jjcoolay: I didn't buy the knife, I got the picture from ebay.

Jeff

P.S. Did Spyderco bring back the Renegade and the Blackhawk??

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think it was sometime during the early part of this year.

Renegade and Blackhawk are back for a limited time only, being made from new-old-stock parts. When they are gone they are gone for good.

since we are on this subject can someone break down the years when the different boxes are used? i've seen three kinds of boxes, the new one thats shown on this thread with the spyder web, the white ones with the blue outline knife and the all black ones. whats the years they used these different boxes? any more box types?

Hi All,

Hmmmm.....The history of Spyderco's packaging.....

When the company started, all our production was done in Seki City. Those knives came in black, blue or red cardboard boxes (not sliders, they opened on either end with flaps). The boxes themselves had no writing on them, just the product name and barcode printed on a sticker on the side.

1990- When we started some production here, those knives where packaged in either a small or medium sized black and white slider box with the Spyderco name and bug on top. The Japanese product still came packaged in the colored 'flap-end' boxes.

In 1996-1997 we introduced white slider boxes with the blue lettering and gold bug. Most models regardless of whether they were made here or in Seki we started packaging in the white/blue sliders. There were (and still are) a few exceptions like our very small knives, Ladybugs e.g.

2002 we changed to the black slider boxes, like the image Jefroman posted.

The PlainEdge Rescue is discontinued just this year, that's why it's in a black slider.

Those are some nice boxes however... I'm ashamed to say I haven't bought a Spydie in like 6 months...so I haven't seen em before.
