has there been a flat ground choiless boss jacks at any point (from the custom show models)?

I've switched back from carrying/using the cabs because I constantly feel like I need/want an extra inch of blade length, but the geometry is way better on the cabs. If I could just get the choiless boss jack I have in a flat ground configuration (without the edge being super thick) It would be ideal.

What things/tasks are you doing where you find you're needing the extra length?

Funny. I was just thinking that my CABS was making my BOSS Jack unnecessary as I haven't run into the need for those extra inches (when paired with a chopper/BWM).

Not that I'm getting rid of my BOSS Jack, it's a killer knife by itself, but I'm not going to carry it around with the CABS and BWM like I was planning to, and that's a good thing.

From a three-knife combo to a two-knife, all because the CABS is just that well done and capable. The *only* thing I'd change about my CABS would be the handle slabs.

Anyway.

I agree that a choil-less BOSS Jack ground exactly like a CABS would be winning combo..

pretty generic stuff, processing small wood for fireplace use, cutting bread/onions/general food prep. It's fine for boxes and small tasks like taking out stitching, but I mostly use a box cutter for that (or the much slimmer blade on my leatherman). it got by just fine at all tasks, it was just pushing the length to do them, especially processing wood.

But, the boss jack doesn't do as well at any of the tasks since it's pushing the stuff apart so much faster. it's a kind of frustrating trade off to get the better length at the cost of lowered cutting performance. With a flat ground boss jack that wasn't tank-thick at the edge it would be all gain for me over the CABS as far as an EDC for-all-tasks knife.

No, flats grounds that Ive seen or heard of.....yet. Jerry mentioned the new bevel experimentation and now we have hollow grinds etc.

You might be able to get exactly what your wanting when they bring out the BJ LE.

With a convex zero edge!

You might just want to send it off to a customizer for some thinning and edge work.

4th try to edit my double post. Damn my giant thumbs and these tiny phone keys.

This may seem like a silly set up but it illustrates what I'm talking about. The cabs is totally able to take on this english muffin, and if I really needed to make it work and it was some kind of crazy 8" wide english muffin I could always just rake the edge of the tip down the center instead of trying to split it.

the same thing happens when processing wood. I don't really need to work anything larger then 4" round, but I like to. if I really needed to there are other ways of making it work like cutting out corners and using wood wedges.

The tips might look like there pretty close in geometry, but thats from having changed the intial edge geometry considerably. You can see by the width of the 18 degree releif bevel how much metal was removed. The edge itself is 24 degrees.

This is a pretty hard image to capture well, so this is the best I could do. You can see the drastic difference in geometry with the boss jack not only being thicker at the spine, but having a ton of extra metal right in the middle of the knife as a result of the convex grind. I understand that it makes the knife stronger, but this knife would be plenty strong with a flat grind and less thick of an edge.

I don't mean this to be complaining about either knife: they are both awesome. I have no complaints about the CABS, I just wish I had a longer version. The boss jack pretty much is a longer version, it's just a little on the thick side.

Abj would be cool. I wonder what an anorexic dsf would be like in the kitchen? The sharp upsweep towards the tip seems like it would be good for slicing onions, tomatoes or meats, and the blade length is decent enough for a bagel or even a small bread loaf imo
