Question about the Norton India stone: Does it hold oil on top?

As some of you know, I have a Lansky combostone which I am pretty sure is Alum Oxide. One problem though, Any oil I put on top runs through in 5-10 seconds. So I probably go though an ounce or two of oil each sitting. It is not that I sharpen all that much but this stone is like a sieve. Petroleum jelly helps a little bit but only for a couple of passes. I keep a plastic tray under the stone to catch all of the oil. I didn't think any thing wrong with this until I got my Norton SiC stone. I put oil on it and did a little sharpening then put the stone back in the cardboard box. There was still oil on top a couple of days later. Can I expect the same kind of oil retention with a Norton India? Oil savings alone would probably pay for India in a couple of weeks.

I use WD-40 and it stays on the top of my India stone for a long time.

Norton India stone is very dense and holds oil on top for a long time with no extra measures, especially if its never been boiled out. It will hold oil longer than the silicon carbide stone. I use mineral oil - mixed with a few drops of essential juniper oil for some nice aromatherapy while I work...

Yes, the Norton India will retain oil on it's surface for some time. I use a thicker mineral oil and it stays on the stone. Still, I clean it off after each use. DM
