Question about the problems with Buck Vantages

Maybe this has already been covered before. If so, could someone point me in the right direction?

I was wanting to pick up a Buck Vantage for my brother for Christmas. The only thing is I don't want to buy one of the first production runs that had the issues. Is there anyway to confirm when purchasing from a retailer whether or not the ones they are selling are the first production run, or could someone point me in the right direction to purchasing the newer run of them?

There is a date on the box. The 1st ones were made Feb. and Mar. if I remember right. My Pro was made in March and has a few problems. Nothing real bad. The tip wasn't sharp at all and the blade wasn't centered. Fixed both myself. My liner-lock goes about 1/2 way, a little more than I would like but still not that bad. Got my son the Select model and it came perfect. Way sharper tip than mine and very well centered.
