Question about the small Sebenza......

After hearing so much about the sebenza line of pocket knives, I am very interested in purchasing one. I am looking into the small because I want to legally carry it. Just a few questions though. Any advice as to where to get it? I see it advertised on the DK website for 290.00. Is there a waiting list for the sebenzas or are they usually in stock? Would anyone recommend the Umfaan over the small sebenza? Or would anyone recommend a better folding knife with similar blade length? Thank you in advance!

You are asking about my favorite non auto. knife.
After reading about how eveybody hates to use their $290 new Sebenzas, I bought one from a guy who said it was used only to open envelopes and too small for his hand.
When I got it, it was like new, I saved $50 and was not affaid to use it.
You my just like the idea of buying it new. There a few dealers who have them in stock.
It is a great little knife and CRK service is the best.
I have a small wood inlay on order; not to use.
I also have a Umfaan on order, but have never handled one.
I am sure I will like it because I like my small and large.
I like the small or large clipped to my front pocket, but will use the Umfaan for dress up pocket care.
I never carried a knife before I got my small Sebenza, but now I feel naked without it.
I have not gotten up enough courage to sharpen it yet (even though I bought a sharp maker 204) and will probably send it back to CRK for sharpening.

I ordered my small sebenza from Dennis Wright

I highly recommend ordering from Dennis. He is a pleasure to do business with and usually has small sebenza's in stock. Give him a call.

No, I don't have one (read: poor). Now, if I did, I would beat it to death. I have a few mid-rangers that I use because I bought them to do just that. You pay for materials, fit and finish, usability and feel... all factors that are moot if the knife is to sit in a drawer.

My humble opinion

PS - I want a William Henry Kestrel as a daily user; if I got one, it would prabably end up in my pocket, ARG!!!, without the leather 'pocket protector.' And, I would sharpen it myself - if you use it, you dull it; if you dull it, you sharpen it.

Hey Battalion Commander,
For my first I'd go with the small Sebenza over the Umfaan simply because it's a perfect size to do 90% of the tasks you'd normally want a folder to be able to do. The Umfaan is certainly a super knife but is a little closer to a gent's knife IMO.

If you want to go new over used, the price is basically going to be $290 wherever you look, so the real issue usually becomes one of availability. Check out the "Good, Bad and Ugly" forum to get an idea of the more reputable dealers out there. Fortunately for us there are many. If you do happen to run across a particularly good deal on a used one, be advised that Chris Reeve can do an overhaul that will have it looking almost new again.

Rick, I too was scared to death to attempt sharpening my Sebenza until I bought my EdgePro Apex. It's amazing to me how well this product works and how easy it is to learn to use. I was definitely in the remedial sharpening class, but now I sharpen all of my expensive blades with impunity and get great results.

If you have trouble finding one, try calling CR knives and they can tell you to whom they have recently shipped knives. It worked for me.

She had called many dealers that I had recommended to her, but it was right before Christmas last year and their cupboards were bare.

That is how I was introduced to Dennis Wright who shipped to my wife my 40th birthday present quickly. He was very helpful and usually has a deep inventory.

As far as which size, that is a tough one. I now have all three (thanks to the Dogman) and I like all three sizes. Used to be that I used the big un most, but now that I have the small, it will get the nod.

I have many custom knives, but I usually end up going back to a Sebenza.

Hang out in the Exchange, Individual section here on the Forums. There's usually one or two for sale less than list. The small is my favorite of the three. Luck.
