Question about the SOGTech

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I bought my first fixed blades: a Seal Pup and a SOGTech. I must say I don't regret buying them. These are realy great knives. But I have some questions/complaints about the SOGTech.

Everywhere I look for information on the SOGTech, it says that it comes with a nylon sheath. But the sheath I got is definitly not nylon. At first sight it looks like leather and it smells like leather, but don't think it is real leather. To me it looks like a cheap, "fake-leather" sheath. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's just not what I expected to come with such a fine knife.

The next question is about the blade. I have used the SOGTech for chopping some wood and afterwards I noticed that a small section of the edge (about 5mm) had gone blunt. Maybe this is normal (I'm a newbie to knives) but i think there's something strange about this.
The affected section of the blade (near the tip) is not the section I was using (center of the blade) when doing the chopping. Maybe I accidently used the tip a few times, but the rest of the blade is still as sharp as it was before.
So I wonder if this is normal or if there is a litle defect in the steel?
It's not a real concern to me, but I just didn't expect it needed resharpening that fast.

Greetings,

Timba.

Hi There!

Allow me to be the first to welcome you on board. Our moderator is on a "vacation", so please give him some time to get back to your question (which knowing him, would probably be within a few hours if not minutes!)

Congratulations on your fine choice of an excellent pair of fine SOG cutting tools. I am sure they would give you lots of "pleasure", as mine has.

Hi Timba,

Thanks for your post and welcome to the forums.

The Tech used to, but a year or two ago, we converted it from a nylon sheath to a leather sheath (yes, it is leather).

During heavy chopping, a small "dent" can happen in the blade if you hit something hard (like a nail). If chopping is an activity you plan to do often, you may wish to grind a blunter edge onto the knife.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Thanks Ron. Meanwhile I showed the sheath to someone who knows more about leather than me. She also said that it is real leather, but not of top quality. She also said that the black color might rub off after a while. I think I expected a sheath of beter quality from SOG.
It's ok for now though. Maybe I'll replace it in the future. Perhaps you know any custom sheath makers?

Greetings,

Timba.

P.S Thanks for the welcome Knizzard. I've been reading this forum for a while though. Has helped me choose between all those awesome SOG knives.

Timba,

Welcome to the family. Stick around and please do post more. Be hearing from you.

Timba, welcome to the Forums.

For a good aftermarket sheath toy may want to try Eric "Normark" at On Scene Tactical. He makes Kydex sheaths that are tough and good value for the money.

Happy Hunting.

On Scene Tactical has some nice products and I am considering to buy a sheath there. But actually I was refering to someone who can make me a leather sheath. Thanks anyway.

Timba.
