Okay, BB and Satin rats have temper lines, right? Just wondering a couple of things here:
1) If it's not too much of a secret, how are the back of the blades insulated, since I'm going to guess it's not mud. My guess would be that they are put in some kind of sleeve in order to produce a temper in such quantity.
2) If one polishes a Satin rat with a temper line, will it stay? While I'm at it do differentially tempered satin rats even ship with a visible temper line?
Thanks for your time.

I have seen a pic of a Rat Daddy LE that showed the temper line, but it was kind of faint, due to the satin finish.
I think the Temper line shows up alot better when it has the double cut finish.

The temper line goes clear through the knife, AFAIK so it will always be there, no matter how much you polish it.

Where did you get a satin rat? or did you mean satin finished?

I don't have a Satin Rat, I mean Satin finish.
Ratfink, I know the temper goes all the way through, but from what I've seen from the smiths here, it can be polished off, and needs to be given an acid bath to get it to show up again. Of course, I could be wrong!

Hmmm. How do they keep that temper line so straight???

I don't recall ever seeing a satin finished tempered blade ship out. I would guess that the temperline wouldn't be quite as visible as a double cut...but that it would still be visible. I think that a polished finish may hide the temperline though. But those are just guesses.

Hang on a sec...I'll get Eric...

Hey Eric!! Our newest Rat has a question!

Ahem. He'll be by shortly.

Ahem. . 360, have you forgotten the Rat Daddy LE? They have a visible temper line.
maybe higher polishing makes it less visible. . .

Well my Satin Rat, errr, I mean my wives Satin Rat has a temper line that is hardly visible.

One thing that is very unique about the Swamp Rat blades with a differential temper is that they do not need to be acid etched to show the temper line. We have etched some and it does show up slightly better but it is not necessary. The Satin Battle Rat and the Satin Rat Daddy LE both have polished blades(they were not acid etched) and the temper line shows on both of them.

There are other pics out there of unfinished blades that you can see the temper line on and the ones that have been stripped by customers the temper lines show as well. Sometimes they are more visible then others but the temper lines are there.

I'm sorry I can't discuss how we differential temper the blades

I hope that helps

:D:D

I was right....Rat Magic. :D

This whole place is shrouded in Rat Mystery.
