Question about the ZT0301 & Tiger Striping

Hey guys,

Couple of questions -

1. Does the 0301 have a grippy g-10 handle on it? The handle looks just like the 0121 handle which isnt grippy at all. Just curious.


2. I'm trying to decide whether to order the TS version of the 0360.skd or the black version. How well does the TS hold up when used? I plan on using it, so was just curious. Would it hold up better than the BLK version? I have 1 hour and 23 minutes to decide before I lose pre-order price, lol. I can't make up my mind!

The TS version looks pretty awesome, but the BLK was my original choice. Decisions.... Just wondering how it held up, I dont have a TS blade. Thanks!
 
Not sure about the first question. I know there was a thread awhile ago about how well the TS coating held up and it was getting great reviews. Nothing but the normal scratch here and there from normal use. I'll see if I can find a link.
 
Ahh awesome man, I'll promptly check it out. Got an hour to decide which coating I want. I'm leaning toward the tiger striped..
 
I would get the TS. It looks cool and it holds up just as well as the DLC coated blades.

Yep, that's what I ended up going with. I dont have any of their TS blades so I'll have something new! Thanks again for the help.



I'm still wondering how grippy the 0301 handle is if anyone knows. JUst want to make sure it has some grip to it before ordering. Thanks!
 
It is more than grippy enough, especially the titanium side. Besides it fills the hand so well you won't need to worry about it at all. Surprisingly a great slicer too! I would almost compare its performance to my original manix (I know not a zt/kershaw but good for comparison).

Hey thanks man! That's exactly what I needed to hear! Gonna order one up on payday.
 
The 0301 is still my favorite ZT. I highly recommend it. The handles are smooth, but it is still plenty grippy due to the the pattern machined on the G10 and titanium sides. That same pattern is also on the 0200. It doesn't have rough texture of, say, the 0350, but all the ridges do provide plenty of traction.

The tiger stripe finish is basically the same DLC as on the rest of the ZT line. I remember reading that they basically start with a regular DLC coating and then bead blast the tiger stripe pattern into it. Because it is a DLC coating, it should hold up like any other. I've cut a tin can into a spiral ribbon with my 0550, and it didn't scratch the DLC at all. It left a mess on the surface of the DLC, but that all wiped off with some metal polish. The "scratches" ended up just being tin residue in the pores of the DLC.

Here are some pics of the DLC coating on my 0550 after cutting up the can after wiping most of the "scratches" off with just a wet paper towel.

Here it is after going over it with some Nevr-Dull (metal polish). As you can see, none of the "scratches" remain.

Hey thanks for the responses guys.

I ended up going with the Tiger Stripe. I wish I could have bought one of each (0360.skd), but I'd rather have a 0360 and a 0301. I've wanted a 0301 for a long while.

Flarp, that never-dull is awesome! If I can ever find my 0550blk I'd love to put some of that on it!
 
You will love the 301. It is my favorite folder. Period. And I have a 550, 560, 200, 350, 400, a bunch of Kershaws, a boatload of Benchmades, and some Spydercos. The only knife that comes close to my love of the 301 is my Benchmade 275 Adamas. When I can get some thing straightened out, I fully intend to get another 0301, or 0300. It is just a fantastic knife.
 
One word of advice hccaves, if the 0301 comes with slight vertical play, it probably needs to be cleaned. I bought mine and it came with just a tad, but you had to really push down on the spine to get it. I just cleaned it for the first time and really wiped down the blade tang and ti lockface and reassembled it and the play is completely gone. Be careful putting it back together though, as you have to align the pivot bolt with the big bronze washer a certain way; otherwise the blade won't close all the way. Found that out the hard way but it is all good now. Kind of felt dumb too. Never do this half asleep. The 0301 really is IMO one of the best knives ever made if you ask me. Everything comes together so well and I like the heft. That is why I am looking forward to the 0888 so much.

Hey thanks, I'll check it out! Mine should be here by Saturday at the latest. I'm thinking if I really like it, I might order the serrated 0301 too! I wish I could find a decently priced 0302, but that's doubtful - I'm too late to the party.

Welp, I'll finally feel the beast of a blade in my hands this weekend. Can't wait!

Amazon has had some great prices on new 301ST (was $212 shipped prime) . Got mine last week.

Yeah I saw that :) I order stuff from them all the time and it's on my wish list.

I ordered a blem since I plan on using it. If I get the serrated ,I'll buy a new one. Thanks for the heads up!
