I like most of their designs, and based on the price point, are they worth it...or do I just save up a little more cash and go up to a Fehrman, Busse, Swamp Rat etc...

It seems that TOPS uses 1095 exclusively, and that is a time tested a good steel...if its heat treated well, does TOPS have a good heat treat?

Tops has a very good HT, The steel, to me, seems more dense than most other 1095 I have owned. What I mean is, it feels more wear resistant on the sharpening stone but still sharpens easy. Their a plenty of knives out there but if you want a good blade in 1095 buy a tops.

So, out of most all the 1095 being produced commercially for knives, TOPS is going to be among the best?

I have used quite a bit of 1095 from several manufactures. TOPS and RAT Cutlery have the best I have used as far as edge retention .

Well if your considering a Busse or Fehrman ultimately, then by all means save up for those 2. However a guy can always enjoy another knife even with those other 2 you listed and TOPS makes some bad*** knives man. I own a whisper and recently received the Commache Hawke II http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=256
and it's an awesome knife, very strong, nasty sharp and holds it well too. They are one of my favorite makers. IMO their HT for the 1095 makes it quite a bit different than alot of other 1095's Ive used as its hold the edge ALOT better and a guy can thin it down a bit more and it still holds it the same.

if you compared high grade steel with a bad heat treat and bad steel with a good heat treat the bad steel will perform better so if you used good with a proper heat treatment it will work superbly

I have a few TOPS knives in 1095, and a few in 154CM.

They are all very well made. Definitely a step above most production knives.

Not only does TOPS make some great knives, they are some truly great people to deal with.

I was going to buy a TOP Cochise, but for the same amount of money you can get a Scrap Yard, Fehrman, Ranger, RAT, Swamp Rat.
