I just heat treated an O1 toolsteel blade coated with turco....I painted it on...after quenching the blade I noticed that the turco etched into the blade, all over the blade...kinda looks like damascus a little.... did I do something wrong....?

Do you know the temperature you heated to? I really don't know because I've never used that stuff. I have some NO-CARB that you paint on and that stuff has to be wire brushed off or ground off. I don't use it either because of that.

I use Turco on all of my D2 blades and harden at 1870° to 1880°. It leaves a gray surface discoloration, but nothing like scale. I give each blade two coats.

It breaks down somewhere between there and 2000°, because I lost some S30V blades when I tried it on them.

shgeo,

Do you thin it first? I heard 50/50 with toulene is appropriate and dipping is the ticket (vs painting).

Steve,
I bought the quart size which comes with no info, so have just used it straight. When the blades are small enough, I just dip them. If the are wider than 1 1/4" they won't fit through the hole and I use a paint brush.

Problem solved! I painted on the turco which left it thinner in spots...that is where it etched the blade...I will now dip them....that is the key...even coats... :)
