Question About White Grubs as Food

One of the edible bugs listed in the "Sustinance" section of Greg's book is grubs. I was reminded of this when I was chopping wood yesterday and turned an old log over to discover a bunch of white grubs of considerable size underneath(about one centimetre in diameter and four centimetres long). I believe these grubs are the same variety that can be found under your lawn.

Are these the same type of "grub" that are edible, and if so, how many of you have actually eaten one of these?

Did you try one?

Please say yes....

They are edible and actually provide a lot of valuable protein and fat (some carbs too). They can be eaten raw or cooked in any fashion you'd like.

I have eaten many and actually prefer them to slugs

Well...grub is a pretty vague term if you don't know insects. A grub to one person might be a maggot to someone else.

. If the grubs in question had legs on their anterior end, they were likely the same as you MIGHT find in your yard, i.e., a Japanese beetle or similar scarab larvae such as a chafer. There are many scarabs including the dung beetle Phaenaeus vindex. You weren't eating dung beetles were you?

Greg - Thanks for the link to your forum that I didn't know existed. I will be spending some time there for sure.
Sorry to dissapoint you but I did not give it a try - I wasn't that hungry at the time.

Hoodoo - I have no Idea what this type of grub is called but here is a picture. Let me know what it's name is and if you have nibbled on it or not.

Eric - Could you please post any links you have to the "bug eating" sites you mentioned. I would love to go to the CKG show but unfortunately it is being held when I will be moose hunting in Northern Ontario. I will definately have it on my calendar for next spring.

Looks like beetle larvae to me. Probably in the scarab family. You'd have to send it to an authority to classify it lower than that. They are fat little things so I imagine they would be highly nutritious. Most insects lay down fat in the final stage of their juvenile period. So from an energy standpoint, you would want to consume the older grubs. More energy per grub.

Bon appetit!
