Usually I take the policy to not go over 1k for a knife..... However I have been looking at MS knives and came accross Daniel Winkler. His knives have an old world rustic charm that catches me. Does anyone else own any of his work? Does anyone know of anyone else who does this kind of work? Any comments are appreciated.

I correct myself....period pieces is more to the affect of what I meant, not "old world". thanks for the correction guys.

I don't own any pieces from Daniel Winkler, but I sure do admire his work. I'm sure there are other makers that do period pieces, but I don't know anyone that does it better. When you add the sheath work from Karen Shook I think you have a package that would be hard to match.

I don't know why you think of them as Old World they scream American Frontier to me. You are certainly correct about them having Charm.

I have some of Daniel and Karen's pieces. You can check my previous post for photos of some of them. They have also made displays for mine.

Phil is right, there are others doing period pieces, however none better. They can create a very period correct primitive piece that looks 200 years old or a beautiful fully dressed out vest bowie and sheath that would have been fit for a high stakes San Francisco gambler.
And on top of that, they are just a pleasure to deal with and have done so much to promote the custom knife industry.

Just missed out on one of his excellent bowies last August.

It isn't just his knives that are impressive -- take a close look at those sheaths, they're little miracles of craftsmanship.

They are ALL over $1K, and very much worth it in my opinion.

I'm slowly saving and on the lookout. Heck, I might even try to talk him into making one 'just for me.'

His close linkage with an important period in American history is 'icing on the cake' for me. I may be a scientist (well, an old one anyway), but that doesn't stop me from being a history buff.

Others make excellent knives from roughly that period. But I don't think anyone is quite as skilled as him...or quite as authentic. For me, it's Winkler or nothing.

I found this on a dealer's table a couple years ago. It was under 1K. Just to my liking.

On second thought Barrabas74 don't look at my Winkler photos:D :D :D

Coop, great photo as always. Looks like flames rising from the blade edge.

Thanks for the opinion guys. I do love his sheaths, and it is the icing on the cake for me. I do re-enactments(forgive me for the spelling I've had a few)that revolve around the french/indian-revolutionary war and civil-war era and until tonight have not seen his knives. They are right up my alley. Thanks for the pics by the way.

If you have the opportunity you might also check out Rich McDonald from Columbiana,Ohio. He makes a vaiety of primitive knives that are very nice . His wife also makes very nice looking period sheaths. I know I was attracted to his ball end froniter style knives.

Thanks for the reference I will contact him on his prices and see what his wait ti me is. I do like his pieces, they are diff from Winklers for sure but I they are still nice.

I've worked with Daniel on the ICCT handbook for competition safety and cutting. Dan has run a competition that I have participated. He is a fine considerate integral individual and Karen is his perfect compliment of like talent and good heart. I have the deepest respect for both individuals...Take Care...Ed

Rick McDonad´s work is very nice and you may want to check James Batson´s, too, as well the late Don Broughton, though I have seen only one or two pieces from this maker show up in the last few years.
Anyway, I think Daniel Winkler´s pieces have a class of their own, maybe not being the most faithfull reproductions but for sure having the period flair like no other knives. You can spot a Winkler knife a mile away.

Not a Winkler knife or Winkler style but I was impressed by it:

And I also like this one:

James Batson is a great guy and very knowledgeable with regard to authentic bowie history & designs. His fit & finish varies a lot from piece to piece, so be a discriminating buyer.

I've had 3 of D. Winkler's pieces. I still have two, a completely decorated tomahawk, and a short damascus bowie with elk antler. He's got that little friction folder in his repertoire which I really like, and one day I will buy one.

I'll be the first one to admit that Daniel's style has had a very strong influence on what I've made over the last 5 or 6 years. Having Karen do the sheath and leatherwork pulls everything together in a great package. Here's some past and present work I have at: http://www.bladegallery.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=663&websess=244423854264

Thanks for the link Tai, I need a new set of holsters. This guy makes some nice stuff:thumbup:

That Cascade Cougar and Stellar hunter look right up my alley Raymond. Those are nice knives.

Thanks for all the names guys, I got alot to sort through and decide.

I got a Winkler tomahawk & camp knife set early this fall. Spectacular work all the way around, really amazing attention to detail. A pleasure to work with as well. No regrets at all, and hope to add more of work to my collection when circumstances allow.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to get my set photographed and share it with everyone - really great stuff.
