Hey guys I have been doing a series of mods to my kershaw skyline linerlock, and am now considering replacing the scales with some nice wood. Would the scale on the non-lock side need to be backed with some sort of liner to make it stiff enough? Or is there a certain wood strong enough to be used without a liner?

For those of you that may be interested in the mods I have been doing you can check them out here:

#1 pocket clip

#2 back spacers

#3 pocket clip

Any help would be appreciated.

Man,Lots of work for a $10.00 knife.Looks like something i would do! :DYour scale would need to be thin,so i would go for a dense wood that has also been stabilized.I dont think a liner would be needed.Something dyed or double dyed and heavy burled would be my choice.

I would use a liner on the non lock side, some .030 SS should be plenty strong. And stabilized wood for sure.

Thanx guys, I was planning on stabilized wood for sure, just have to wait for something to catch my eye. So, should I use a liner or not? 1 yes, and 1 no. Hmm, you two arm wrestle and let me know who wins...

Seals- yeah I thought this knife would be the perfect platform for modding. Cheap, simple construction, well balanced, and easy to work on. I have been having all kinds of fun tinkering with it.

Thanx

I put wood scales on a Kershaw Chill, which has liners on both sides. I used some ipe flooring scrap. The wood scales are thicker than the original G10 ones so it feels better in my hand, I didn't remount the clip. I also did a similar handle replacement on a Tenacious (bamboo flooring).

Fun and relatively simple modification to do. Have fun.

Thanx Stan. I guess you won the arm wrestling match! Now where do I find a small quantity of SS in that thickness? I may be open to other materials as I don't have a metal bandsaw and will be using a hack saw. Also I would like it to be able to take jeweling well and not have it get all washed out. I've never done jeweling on SS do you think it would work? Maybe Ti?

Way cool of you Stan! 4.5" x 1.25" should do the trick. Email coming your way.

Stan's da man!
