I have been thinking about getting a waved emerson. But I have heard that it will wear out the pants pocket corner over time. Is this very common?

I also had a wierd idea relating to the wave. Is is possible to make a sheath that would take advantage of the wave? such as when pulling the knife out it would wave?

I've had a Commander for over a year and a half.... no damaging pocket wear from waving, and I wave all the time. (mind you, I wear jeans all the time, never slacks and not often any lighter pant, even my lighter pants didnt show major damage from waving.)

There is a sheath made, the Quick Draw Sheath, Emerson Knives Inc. sells it.
I dont like the look, formed Kydex looks better to me, but its available.

I've been planning to, sometime this year, get some Kydex, and make a belt sheath for my Commander, so I can draw it, stronghand, using the wave, and have it come out in reverse grip.
Just for my own hoots and giggles.

Any competent sheath maker (of which there are several on the forums) should be able to make a similar rig for anyone who wanted one.

The official name of the thingamabob is the Rapid Deployment Sheath

Check out the Emerson Website and do a search for it. I believe there is a video of the sheath in action.

I've had an Emerson Commander of one sort or another in my pocket ever since they became available to the public. You can't go wrong with this knife. The only pocket wear I have ever noted did not come from the wave but from the square edges of the pocket clip. I usually remove all clips and spend a few moments eliminating all rough edges from the clip. The area near the screws that is in direct contact with the top edge of your pants pocket. I also smooth the lowest edge of the clip to keep from scratching things I might brush against. These two modifications take 30 minutes or so. Tools to use include either a ceramic sharpening rod (useful for commander sharpening anyway), some sort of small whetstone or even 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a pencil. Restrict all you activities to just the target edges since the clip will not cold blue if you create scratches.

For what it's worth the original patent application for the wave included a sheath that promoted rapid opening.

I've had a slightly different experience as far as wear on pant-pockets go.., so I'll share it just for some breadth of opinions.

I think what you've heard about as far as pocket damage.., is probably related to semi-pricey, extemely thin dress trousers (just guessing). I say this because like NWH.., I've carried various Commanders since they have been around also. I have had some damage around the corners of pockets.., and also done the same basic clip-smoothing that NWH mentions (which is a very good idea).

I do think as long as you are wearing jeans.., or something like Dockers.., etc.., that you will have no problem with pocket damage.., but as mentioned I have thrashed some flimsy high-end "Yuppie" trousers "waving" :(.., so if I have to get dressed up I just carry a Sig and a 9mm Uzi :p <~~ [teasing]!!!

Get one...it's a great knife...

I've ripped a pair of jeans and a pair of cargo pants by using the wave. I tend to not use it much anymore. Instead I just wrap my finger around the blade and pull the knife out without opening it. It's kind of a buzzkill but at least I'm not showing extra skin.
