Dear tazkristi, Sal,

White noise in head about the Mariner. I've been wondering why the H-1 PE Mariner didn't exist. It would seem that to make one would require one less step, the cutting of serrations, and lots of sailor/ rope-centric people have stated on searched threads here and on your other forum that a PE Mariner would be highly sought after. Cut to yesterday, I saw that a Japanese company is offering the Mariner that way.

So, the question is, why not offer them here? The first answer would probably a financial one- they don't sell. But, your company never offered them here. So, how bout' it? Offer them here through one of your special dealers, say New Graham? Pretty Please so we don't have to go through the hassle of ordering them from Japan.

Thank You,
Chris

I believe it's the same reason that a PE Jumpmaster is available there and not here.

Josh K, believe me, I understand that the Japanese market likes PE better than SE, but, I would think (and that's where I get in trouble) that getting a few PE pieces over here to a select dealer wouldn't be too much of a logistical hurdle to make. If the 10 or so pieces don't sell that well, no harm, no foul- get them back over to Japan.

I would think the shipping would suck. I know a couple people have managed to get PE versions back to the states, but not on the dealership level. There might be trade restrictions or some legality regarding Spyderco's Japan made products and their sale both here and there. Might be Japan's foundry wants something (exclusive PE?) for making the knives there.

Short simple answer, there's not enough demand for them here to justify Spyderco offering the H-1 Mariner in PE. On the other hand, since they do exist, you could simply order one from Japan or wait and hope Youwantit2 decides to import them as they've done with the PE ATS-55 Mariner, PE VG-10 Harpy, Titanium Delica, and a number of other "Japanese market" Spydercos.

Thank you for the link, Deacon. I will probably order one from Japan if the shipping costs aren't too prohibitive.

I'm bringing my own thread up from the depths- PE Mariner H-1 are at http://www.youwantit2.com/SPYDERCO.html .Got one last week, love it- a little expensive, but it's a grail knife for me. The Japanese boxes are pretty cool looking, as well.
