Are any of the rat knives balanced in the center? If so which ones? I would like to be able to use it as a throwing knife if i felt the need.

If you would have taken a bit to look this is what you may have found....

The Izula can cut but how does it throw?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm thinking of getting an Izula in addition to the my RC-4 but i'm wondering, how does the Izula fly when it comes to throwing?

It's not made to throw, period. IMO, if anyone wants a throwing knife they should buy a throwing knife. 57 Rc is not made for throwing. I have never understood why people want to throw tools that are not made for throwing.

To add to that, I would rather replace a knife that was intentionally broken in a vise than replace a knife that was broken from throwing. Throwing a cutting knife is just plain ignorant and stupid, IMO.

Fully aggree with the above comments!

I do have throwing knifes and I am fairly proficient with them, but I wouldn't even think about throwing my RAT knife!

Throwing knifes have different edge geometries due to the impact characteristics.

Choose the right tool for the job.

dude, u dont throw a 1095 knife.

I never could stick those "balanced" throwing knives very well. I can stick a lot of my knives. I like 12" machetes the best. They sound so good just vibrating in the tree. 1095 can be tempered softer for thowing knives. BTW, the balance point on most RC knives is on the first finger. Of course, the RC-10 will likely be a bit blade heavy, as a chopper should be. But throwing a good knife is a good way to damage or break it. I would not recommend throwing the RAT knives.

For throwing I think these are rather nice. :)

Pft, balance doesn't matter, anyone trained in the arts of mallninjajutsu could tell you that!

Is throwing a knife a sport just for fun? In other words what practical purpose would it serve? I don't buy the movie scenes where Vigo Mortenson throws a knife into an opponent (Hidalgo) and drops him like a rock, dead.

I can't think of a situation where I'd want to throw a knife, that would occur in real life.

A knife is usually a weapon of last defense. Taking that and throwing it away is just illogical.

That's my thinkin too. Even if you could manage to get the "pointy end in the other man" as it arrived at his chest would it have enough penetrating power to really remove the threat? I mean you really only have one shot at it right?

Just a note, I was throwing some "throwing knives" a couple of months ago and the knife ricocheted on the trunk and make a great indent on the car hood, not wise. Knife throwing is fun to practice, but it is nowhere useful in my opinion.

"Who is dumb enough to bring a knife in a gun fight ?"

I donno, putting aside temporarily Hollywood's highly questionable depictions of serious wounding...

A thrown knife can hit with a shocking amount of force. I remember once as a kid getting a steak knife (or all things) stuck about an inch into a tree. I could barely pull it out, and I couldn't even pierce the bark by stabbing with it.

My point being a thrown knife could do a huge amount of damage.
If it's possible to drop someone with a pistol you could do it with a throwing knife.
Hell, a large knife might make a BIGGER wound.

Practical? ehhh probably not for 99.44% of the population.
Possible? sure.

just out of curiosity what would be characteristics of a good throwing knife?
hardness, steal, balance point? ( I don;t own any meant for that)

the only place I've ever seen knives thrown effectively have been carnival type acts and they are certainly using something specific.

Heavy! and a handle with defined orientation, IE when you are throwing it you can control while following through the direction of the edge. There are a few different ways you can proficiently throw a knife and it depends alot on the length of the knife and point of balance. Tomahawks are the place to start though, I could NEVER stick a knife until I got proficient with a hawk. It's just alot more natural throwing an axe than it is a knife. Once you get the feeling down you can start working with knives. I got my ontario camp machete to stick once... haven't been able to repeat it though. You want a softer steel, so upon impact the blade doesn't chip or worse yet fracture. You want a reenforced point, but streamlined so you get more penetration. The best knives take almost no effort to throw, the more force you put behind it the bigger chance you're going to miss. They stick just by the force of gravity and the amount of energy it takes to get it to the intended target. HB Forge is the place to start.
