Question concerning holes milled into RD II Hawk...

I have one of these on order, and was curious about the few little round holes cut into the shaft, and the big oval cut in the shaft. Strictly to lighten it's weight, or do they also serve another purpose? Thanks in advance ☺

I think I read somewhere that the large hole may be some kind of natural gas valve wrench... But, not sure on that. As for the few smaller holes... I have no clue whatsoever.

I received my new Ontario RD II hawk for my collection today, (just before I headed out to work). All seems okay ☺ I find it pretty cool that the sheath is made in USA by the New York based 'Desantis' firm. I've exclusively used Desantis leather holsters for my handgun carry needs for almost three decades now. I have found them to be of good quality. Anyhow, this hawk seems to have a nice build quality overall. Size wise, it is basically the next size bigger over my Browning Shock n Awe tomahawk. Again, it will make a nice addition to what I self describe as my "Man Gadget Collection". Ontario Knife Company is currently well represented in my collection ☺

Btw... The spike on this hawk is wickedly pointy (triangular in cross section and ending in an extremely fine point). If I was to guess, I would say it would likely not hold up to too much throwing or cinder block breaking. I would say the Estwing hawk or a S&W Extraction and Evasion hawk would have better cinder block breaking points. This one has a point that seems like it would punch through all sorts of penetration resisting things that humans have (clothing and skulls). The point on this thing... WICKED... And based on the design being done by a former Military professional (Justin Gingrich)... it's kinda obvious what this point is best at... Ouch! lol! 😉

On a side note concerning this Ontario hawk... The current Schrade brand company (Taylor Brands) seems to have a version out that copies much from the RD II Hawk. I ran into some pics of them on Google, and at first thought they were slighty modified models being offered by Ontario. They sure borrowed alot from the Ontario/Gingrich Ranger design.

Update on my inspection of this hawk:
Once I got home from work, I was able to take my time to wipe down the hawk with a light coat of protective oil. The overall hawk is still as I described above, except that there is a good sized area on one side of it that the powder coat is a bit rough looking. It does take away from it's visual appeal. Even though it has nothing to do with function, for me it loses some points on the visual aspect... Simply making it look sloppy 😞 Everything else does seem correct.
