Is the Kershaw Speedsafe 1660 legal to carry in California?I have read over some of the recent revisions over pc 653 and seen the sb 274 and karnette amendment. I have read different knife law wedbsites on Kershaw's assisted openers legality however I carry this specific knife everyday and would like more assurance I am within the bounds of the law. Btw i live in the OC california

If I even had to ask that question I would be packing my self up and getting out of there. What else do they "allow" you to do there.

Yes, the Kershaw Leek is legal to carry in California because it uses an assisted opening mechanism, vs. an automatic mechanism. An "automatic" knife is typically a knife with a blade that springs open or out by activating a button or switch, and does not have a bias towards closure. Automatic knives with blades more than 2" are prohibited to carry in California. An "assisted opening" knife like the Kershaw Leek opens by pressing the thumbstud or flipper, and has a bias towards closure.

^(Just be aware that not every law enforcement officer is familiar with the difference between the two.)

Cali is really wide open for knives, very few laws...

Very generally speaking, Cali does not allow auto knives, knives that open by gravity, and knives that open without some sort of manual control of the blade.

Karnette addresses knives that have had the detent disabled....

I am an attorney here in Cali, and carry dozens of assisted opening knives without legal concern....

They sell Kershaw Leeks at Wal-Mart here in Cali. I seriously doubt they would sell them if they were illegal to carry here.

CA really isn't as restrictive concerning knives as a LOT of states/cities in other states. Which always makes me wonder why it's so common on the forums for people from other states to criticize CA's knife laws. Of course, some counties in CA are less restrictive than others, but I've carried all kinds of folders with no problems.
