I just scored a 3-dot 112 and am now awaiting it (a week?). I only have pics the seller had posted. It appears to be in very good condition, just needs 15-20 minutes with some Flitz. From what I've learned from this wonderful site the transition from 440C to 425M was about 1981. My 3-dot 112 is a 1980-81 production.

How can I tell which I have? Is there an easy way to determine this? I'm very lacking in knowledge about these steels, so I'm hoping one of our resident Pro's here will have some input. I hear the 425M is easier to sharpen than the 440C, so I'm hoping it's 425M.

Those who may know... Is this one here most likely a 1980 or 1981?

Thank you for any help. I'll post my own pics when I get it next week.

Here are a couple from the seller for now...

In Larry Oden’s book, Larry states that the 112 received a nail nick in 1980.

Perhaps yours was made in early 1980 before that change.

Thanks for the reply, so the early "dot-3" period perhaps. But then again it has the 3 larger brass pins. Unless the pin changes were over a relatively short period of time before they settled on the larger pins. The blades they use up the old supply til it's gone, so this maybe explain the "no notch" blade. And this blade is not hollow-ground or it's very minimal. I think I read that "hollow ground" began here too? Was it "more hollow" towards the end of the dot-3 into the dot-4?

Per the Data Sheet this appears to be a Category 4, Version 1 "pre-nail notch"... I learn something new here every day, I love it!
