What are the advantages of a flat grind versus a sabre /hollow ground blade??

Sorta a newbie question but just curious

You'll find a lot of help at the Knowledge base section before you enter the forums.
Cutting performance wise (in an overly simplified manner), from best to "worst", hollow grind -> flat grind -> sabre grind
Hollow grind initially keep the least metal behind the edge, making it cut very easily, provided that you're not cutting deep into the material, cause it widens disproportionally. It's more prone to damage because there's less metal to back the edge.
Flat grind has the advantage of a good cutting edge but also having a decent amount of metal behind it.
Sabre grind is kinda like a flat grind, but it doesn't grind right back to the spine, but like 1/2 way or some spot. It's tougher because it has more metal behind it, but it makes a deeper wedge and doesn't cut as easily as a flat grind.
HTH and check out Joe Talmadge's (sp) FAQs in the Knowledge base, and use the search function to help you get the pictures you need.

JJ - you from HOK? I dunno who you are or which store you're from but if I see you at a HOK gathering I'll show you my G10 police which is flat and my AFCK which is sabre. The differences in the edge are quite noticeable when you do some heavier cutting.

The AFCK (sabre) IMO is definitety better suited for heavier cutting tasks and was like Gold on my last camping trip. Went through rope, smaller frayed branches and various other tasks with not too much problem.

The G10 (flat) I like more for it's cutting finesse. It'll do finer cutting tasks and is a hell of a lot easier to sharpen than the AFCK. Mine seemed to dull quicker than my AFCK...however...it slices more efficiently....

These are just my experiences though...others may think I'm talking out of my ass:)
