Ok, I think i'll break down & get a Vic cadet. My question for you is how do you rate Buck knife quality? I'm talking about the American made models 301, &303? Do you think they're any good? Here all they sell is Buck. Growing up in PA the only (pocket)knife you could get was a Case. If you went in the Marines you got a Camillus (the real k-bar).

I'll put Buck's quality up against any production knife. (And some customs too.)

jpvjr,
Asking me about 303's and 301's is like asking a Corvette owner if he thinks they are fast cars... to be honest when big game hunting I carry a old Vic hunter model with saw and short curved blade. Why because I got it, it's sort of a all-in-one field dressing tool and because it's my lucky knife.....I will also have a couple of Bucks in my pack, my buddy field dresses elk with a 303.
When you buy a Buck you buy a company, rock solid American created from the bootstraps on up. Never been sold, one family owner. In a business you live or die with your quality or lack of it.
Design is long time tuned and tested, steel is the best compromise between user friendly and space age tough. Standard scales are the color of an old model T ford, black to take what you dish out. You want some fancy scales they can do that too. I don't work for'em I just picked'em as MY knife company after dancing with some floosies.
Try one, if you don't like it, I will be surprised. If you don't, go try someone elses knife, that'l leave more for us.

Now that I got that off my chest I feel better....Buck compares with any other TOP level American made production slipjoint pocketknife. Some customs will have tighter tolerances, some won't. What hooks you in the end is the lifetime guarantee. You know one thing to watch for in pocket knives is to see if folks are still carrying the same knife after the blade has been sharpened to almost a nub.
Bet you will see more Bucks like that than that other company.

Wow, talk about waiving a red flag in el campo. The bulls are pretty much bound to notice. Black Buck or Yellow Case? Both nice knives but the Buck has the better warranty and just looks cooler in my opinion. To be honest, there are way more Case collectors but, for me, that is another reason to collect the Bucks.

Where I'm from, you went to a store and got a soddy. If you didn't want a soddy, then the manager went to the back & got a Case catalog. He also gave you funny looks (they were free). Before my deployment orders were cancelled my CSM gave me a Vic soldier, when I showed the guys at the hardware store they just about laughed me out of town.
Helen might know this but some old timers that moved east (from the west coast after ww2) carried 3 bladed knives all us kids drooled over. I never saw that pattern before or since.
They called them "hunter -trappers", & were EEJ's 3.5", &4.5" my shop teacher had a 4.5" model. Its 3 blades were a 3.5", &3" spear, & a 2" pen. The spears were wide , & all 3 were thick (~1/8"). In fact that still would be my ideal knife, especially after he taught us to do up a skunk w/ our knives. If you got sprayed you failed the assignment, w/ my soddy, I failed , but the next week w/ his I passed.

Buck puts out a very good knife for the money. Even their imported models are good quality- they don't put the Buck name on crap!

JB, where did you see that; have you already got the new 08 catalog? Can't wait to get one (both the catalog and the 303)!

I think you'll like Bucks. I remember that store (they're gone now the old man died last month.). When I took my son there for his 1st hunting license Danny took him in back to try out a .30-30, & .357 Magnum Marlin. Two boxes of
.30-30's & 11/2 of the .357's later he picked the .357. Danny also gave him a free knife, & wished him luck.

My son's teacher had that type also. He was drafted for Korea, & was originally from Oregon. Next week when I see him I'll ask who made it we both want 1. (Well I guess really all 3 of us do).

Well I broke down & got a 301. Went home sharpened it up better. This has 3 springs(?) I tested it on 1.5" rope, & made 127s cut thru it w/out having to push. So it's good steel, tomorrow I'll order the 303 since I have small hands. I think I'm going to like them (the 301 for heavy duty stuff, &303 for everyday). Here's an odd question, why does it smell like CLP even after I cleaned it 2x? Also what should I do to protect the steel when not in use? For my CV blades, I wipe them down w/ peroxide, then alcohol, then put them in tissue paper.

Too bad he's dead, all the oldtimey folks are leaving.Yeah, he gave me a box of .30-30's for free also for my 1st hunt.

Link? Link!? For the love of Al Buck, I need a link, man!!!! :D

Nobody has said anything about the 3-knife (or was it 2-knife?) Xmas set that Buck allegedly sent out this last Xmas (only 6 weeks ago???)...I suppose they were all Chinese made, but I'm surprised that there's been no reviews of them...

I might stop by Wally World and see if they came in yet...

Well all I can say is wow! This 301 cuts &cuts &cuts. I brought some red elm from PA with me, it's not good for lathe work, & inwind so you wouldn't use it for furniture. What I did was start doing what I tell everyone NOT to do wittle till its dull. On the master blade I made ~1000 toothpicks with it, & ~800 with each of the other 2 blades. It still has decent working blades.
It does however still smell like CLP.

...hmmm...The "little lady" went out "foraging" last weekend and mentioned that she saw some red knives in a box that said "Buck" on them at Wally's. She said they didn't look exactly like the ones I have so she didn't buy 'em for me. Now I've always said I am a "folder" kina guy...a slippie is a folder too so I may have to make a run to Wally's this week...:D:D

Got the 303, & this is a cutter to. I'd guess if it has stainless steel pivot pins, then this is my new beater. the soddy goes back ~every 3 years to be "fixed-up" it's its spring, & pin that go out on me. My only thought is the springs on the buck are a bit soft, BUT I do like the 3 spring design. 1 blade to 1 spring.
