Question for A2 blade owners

Does any of your A2 blades have the dimpled texture that is so common to infi? I have some blades that were sold as A2 with these dimples. Also have other A2 that is quite smooth. All in question are smooth bolt, smooth contured grips and 5/16, and straight handled. Sheaths are of the same genre. Blades are a BA, and a SH2. With the BA, I have 2 the same except one is smooth and one is dimpled. Smooth examples have the Eagle sheath, dimpled is kydex with the rolled over belt loop.

Going nuts trying to figure out if I have early infi examples or simply a bit of an abberation in the A2 steel. Was oiling the blades up a bit and on these the dimples jumped out of the smooth coat. To say the least I was a bit stunned.

Thanks to all that may be able to shed some light on this.

To date I've never handled or seen an A2 blade with the pitted pattern we've been associating with INFI. Infact INFI is the only steel I've ever seen with it.

That pattern can be gorgeous in it's natural uncoated finish.

That's for sure! I have an NO that the previous owner stripped the coating off of and ground off the rear talon hole flush with the handles. With the dimples and grind marks left in it is a thing of utilitarian beauty. With the rough clean surface you don't have to worry about scratch marks like on satin blades as they just sort of blend in. Right now it's doing duty as a really large paring knife, and quite well I might add.

Thanks for the insight on the A2. I have a feeling that these blades are early examples of infi before it went into full production. In any event they were keepers before and even more now.

OK, I know all that A2 didn't melt away. You guys got them buried really deep in the safe? Just take a look.

Wet, you got my curiosity up, so I examined mine, with interesting results.

The A2 Steel Heart is very smooth, with no discernable dimpled texture.

The A2 BA has a surface appearance that is not really like the INFI dimples, but is not really smooth, either. It can be described as looking like INFI dimples, but much smaller and denser. I am not sure whether the miniature "dimples" are in the steel or just in the coating.

I am certain that they are both A2, because I was the original purchaser, long before INFI was introduced. But the surface texture is slightly different.

Mike,

Thanks. That helps quite a bit. Although the dimples didn't really show until some oil got on the coating and then they were very visible. I'm questioning the Badger now because the grind line at the tang is vertical, not at all like the curved grind line of infi. The SH though has both the dimples and that curved grind line. I guess it will take a trip to the shop to answer this once and for all. It's just kind of weird that some blades will stay smooth when wet with oil and the dimples will come out in the others with what looks like the same coating.

Thanks Skunk. I thought perhaps I had an early infi piece, but I guess not. It's still a keeper though as it's my EDC blade and I love it dearly.:D

Rob, you and Scott just send me those two blades and I will get to the bottom of this for you.

John you are truly a giver, but I thought you had one. It will be in the mail tomorrow. Just send the Argonne down here for my evaluation.:D :D

Get out of here...are you serious? Don't pull another prank like the "black/white patches" that DON'T Exist.

All joking aside do you really have an A2 blade with that texture? If so this changes a lot regarding steel id's we've done in the past for people.

true story my furry friend!

and speaking of joking, you have been doing the joking and pranking on this forum ever since i stumbled on to it!

and don't think i don't know that you sit around with dimly lit lights stroking your infi with some secret wax.

you and that guy with the parrot fetish... what was his name?

1WHOSNORTS, YEAH THATS IT:grumpy:

yes, i have a fatty badger in the rougher first addition bead blast that i got from blade babe or blade art or some place with blade stuck to it.

why in the hell am i telling you all this?

Scott speaks the truth. Mine is 5/16, dimpled but with smooth bolts. I have a 1/4" infi with slotted. The dimpled A2 has that vertical grind, the infi, curved.
