Question for all knife folk. What's the width of your hand?

More specifically, it looks as though I am going into production real soon. On my own. I have my initial design set and a proto made but the handle was a bit too long and I am trying to fit as many hands (averages) as possible. It will of course be a Karambit and while the design is something I like a great deal the handle is a little long. Initially I did it on purpose because many people with fat hands have mentioned I should make handles longer just a tad. Well, looks like I over shot just a bit and while it makes for greater reach (blade to target) it also makes it less comfortable. So I ask you the average regular knife buying fellow to take a second and measure the width of your hand from the outside of the index finger large knuckle to the outside of the pinky large knuckle. Then from the outside of the palm (next to the thumb webbing) straight across to the outer heel (the fat of the hand between the pinky and the wrist). I want these handles to kick ass and, this will certainly help. If you would, please post the results here and I will tally and average. This will become a standard in my work. My humblest thanks in advance for your contribution. Take care...Rich

Hey, we could also use this thread as a database for those unenlightened cops that think legal blade length limit is the width of one's hands.:D

3 3/4" and 4 1/4" respectively.
Me too, within a 16th or so. Should you maybe specify gripped or flat? And flat-in-the-air-palm-up vs. flat-in-the-air-palm-down vs. flat-on-hard-surface-palm-up vs. flat-on-hard-surface-palm-down?

(That measure was FIAPU, for the record.)

WOW, I find all these great and helful resonses. Hey Planterz, HALLELUJAH! How many times have cops used the palm of their hands to justify confiscation? if they'd measured it they'd know better. So, with as many responses I can get between now and Monday morning, all the revisions will be made and the handle adjusted as such. Thanks a million guys, much obliged. I will post pics of the final prototypes when I can. Peace....Rich

Thanks guys, Daniel, this is a fixed blade as most will be in the beginning so it's prefect for both righties and lefties!
