Reading AfghanWarrior's thread on wishing the BK7/BK9 were of 1/4" stock got me thinking (see the dust cloud.....).

It seems most folks agree that thinner stock blades (3/16", 1/8", etc) cut/slice better than thicker stock yet loose no real, practical strength compared to thicker blades.

Would a BK2, in 3/16", be a better knife - given what the Campanion is designed/tasked to do?

Get one of the older Camillus models and put it to the test; they were thinner than the current Kabar offerings. As far as doing what the Campanion was designed to do, well, that is a matter of perception. What do you think it should be able to do? It probably wouldn't chop as well given that it wouldn't have as much weight to generate as much force, but I have no idea how much force would be lost by switching from 1/4" to 3/16". I personally feel that the current model is pretty much as perfect as that knife can get, but I will readily admit I might be a bit biased. The two finger choked down grip might be a bit better though since you don't have the pommel extension to deal with when holding it in such a way. I think there would be trade offs, but at the end of it all, I wouldn't trust a Cam version over the Kabar version, simply because that extra bit of meat in the knife means it is that much tougher, and I have put mine through a good deal of abuse and not had anything approaching an issue because of it.
 
I'm just trying to find out given the BK2's blade width, length and general intended useage, if it would perform better if it were 3/16" instead of 1/4". I don't have the time/cash to buy both and make an evaluation.

Also, I'm not trying to make a comparison between the Camillus BK2 and the BK&T BK2 since from all accounts the BK&T steel is all-around a better performer - different steel = different knife.

I believe Ethan had a reason to make the BK2 from 1/4" and it would be really interesting to learn why. However, since most folks say thinner blades give up nothing useful to thicker ones, do people believe the BK2 would function better with a thinner blade?
 
The BK2 is the exception to the rule, because of the blade geometry the 1/4" is actually a benefit for the BK2, it's a sharpened wedge and as someone else said (possibly Moose), it splits wood way better than it should.
