AOL has been locking up my pc for some reason when I try open web sites. It mostly happens with Ebay but sometimes with BladeForums and other sites. The page partially loads then bzzztttt, it's lock up time. I can't even shut down my pc. I have to pull the plug on it to turn it off. I've gone the route of the AOL techies and as usual that was useless so I figured I'd ask you nut cases and see if you've experienced the same problem and know the remedy, short of puttin a bullet thru the cpu or dumping AOL. I know, it's stupid keeping something as ate up as AOL but it's all I've known since I logged on in 98, it's home.
Thanks if you can help!!
Michael

Pack up your bags and MOVE! Only advice I can give. I got fed up with their PC attitudes on everything and their robotic verbage when speaking to a "real (?)" person.
Get out before you kill your hardware.....it's not at fault!!!! :-)

Try Earthlink. I've used their DSL service for the last several years, and I telecommute heavily, and their service has been quite reliable, and customer support helpful.

The funny thing is that they lease the use of the phone lines for DSL through our local provider, Verizon, who we initially tried to use for a DSL provider. It took dozens of phone calls for literally several weeks, and Verizon could still not get our DSL to work. One call to Earthlink and the service was in.

GET RID OF AO-HELL!!!

I learned a long time ago that AOHell was the Devil. When I switched from dial-up service to high speed cable I ditched AO-Hell like it was a raging psycho-bitch girlfriend on crack. It sucked. The prices sucked. Tech Support sucked. Search function sucked. IT ALL SUCKED!!! And they made millions by duping people to believe it was the best ISP going!!!

I wouldn't use AO-Hell if it was the last ISP on the planet. I'd rather use snail mail or pick up the phone. Right now I use Optimum Online as my service. I get 5 POP3 email accounts which I access thru Outlook Express or Outlook and I use IE6 as my web browser (no problems with it). It is streamlined and easy to use and I don't have the scurge of the ISP world dominating my lean, clean PC's.

Screw AO-Hell, screw Time-Warner. :barf:

Never try to uninstall AOL. AOL is more virus than ISP. Their software sinks its tenticles into your system very, very deep. I've known several people who have messed their systems up horribly trying to uninstall AOL.

What Chuck said is true. I have never used it, but cleaning up an AOL system after it has been installed is nothing short of a hours long nightmare.

Best to make a copy of the stuff you want and start over with a format and reinstall of your OS if you can.

#1. AOL, like Gollnick said, is a virus and tries to be an Internet based OS...truly evil.
#2. When you look at the really good service given by Time Warner/Road Runner broadband cable, to imagine the two as related parties is mind boggling.
#3. You have to call them to cancel service, and when you talk to someone and they can't convince you to stay on with a free month or two, they transfer you to a psychologist who tries to convince you that you have a mental disorder for wanting to abandon their service. Then their "retention department" continues to pester you months after you've managed to dump their crappy offering.

AOL is truly one of the main reason trust of major corporations is at an all time low...the fact that they are located in Langley doesn't help the trust factor, either.

Ok guys, you convinced me. I signed up with Earthlink tonight and am on it right now. I'll still have aol till the rest of this month runs out so I can get all my favorites transferred and such. Thanks for the advice!!
Biggest gripe I got with EL is the way the email works, man that's weird, but I guess I'll get used to it.

Try this for transferring your favorites. When I left aol after the free first year, I didn't know of programs like this, and had to transfer them one at a time. It took me a couple of weeks. They use a different code than everyone else.

After that, try to delete everything in your hard drive that says aol.

Better yet reformat. ONE 'free trial' AOL experience taught me the error of my ways. I really hope they go under soon.

I have helped numerous folks get off AOL. I have good contact numbers and know how to get them to stop offering free months in nthe first breath.

AOL is super-expensive and does weird wacky things to your machine. The downloading of updates when you try to shut off is really just their opportunity to load more crap.

Thank you for not using AOL.

You could start a business or something.

"The first step is to admit that you have a problem. The second step is to call Danelle O'Shea, expert AOL extractor. She'll help you reclaim your computer... and your life. If you -- or someone you love -- suffers from AOL addiction, call Danella today... before the next update."

LOL, I should have my Uncle call you. I tried my damndest to get him to switch to broadband when I built him a new system, but he woudn't do it. Now he's got a nice 2 GHz PC connecting through AOL dialup.
:( It's a crying shame I tell you.
