A very interesting dagger/sheath is on the forum, which might be of interest to our Argentine friends here - and perhaps to some of us. Just do a search on "eva peron" and you will find a dagger of 18k gold, with what looks to be documentation.

Just wondering here if any of you great Argentine makers/collectors might have some insight into what you read in the thread. I cannot post the link here because the link is to an item listed in the exchange. But such an interesting piece should deserve a bit of conversation outside the Exchange, wouldn't you think? Particularly if it were of great historical significance. Just wondering.

Unfortunately, the appraiser from the Antiques Roadshow who appraised it in 2006 is not available until early January. Not that it will probably matter. But trying other contacts now. Doubtful that much more time will be put into this effort, since what would be needed is no doubt unobtainable.

Final ownership and State confiscation along with the legalese would keep me from even wanting to get involved with that piece, in addition to provenance.
Although it is a good topic for discussion.

I do believe his dad bought it in Miami. :D

This may turn into an interesting discussion as even the exchange forum listing has all the twists & turns of a good spy novel. ;)
Curious as to why there's no photo of the blade.
Like Doug, I would not only be running from this piece but running fast.

Good luck in your quest Bob!

What an interesting and complex acquisition on sale in the Exchange.

My ROLLEYES comes from the absolutely horrid/amateur images of the current knife. They are a discredit to the provenance of this piece.

(If you are asking $25,000 for a knife isn't it prudent to wait until you have presentable images? They could add ten times or more to the 'cost' of the photography.)

I guess that's my only sticking point. LOL! ;)

This could be the real deal. Good luck.

When I first saw the Exchange listing, I was intrigued and interested (not the "buy it now" kind of interest, LOL).

However, an item like this would require such precise and thorough documentation/provenance that it would be rather foolish to go fishing without the proverbial 10 foot pole. But the subject seemed interesting enough to spend 10 minutes researching.

Judging by the shape of the sheath in the poor photos, and the knife's orientation within the sheath, I'd say it is a "goucho" knife and not a dagger in the traditional sense at all……if that makes any difference.

Interesting story.

Juan Peron was overthrown by a Military Coup (with the tacit support of the Catholic Church) in 1955. But I have never heard of the Forces of the Free Revolution. I am curious how and why this piece supposedly would have made its way from Argentina to Cuba. Of course when one hears of Argentina and Cuba in that period, one thinks of Che Guevara. But Guevara was in Mexico in 1955 and there does not seem to be any connection by which he would have been involved in transporting this item from Argentina to Cuba.

I think that provenance would be absolutely key to selling this item, especially as there might be questions of lawful possession.

I would think proving it to be the real deal would be fairly easy . . . in Argentina. The Perons were a ego maniacal couple and did everything in the spot light. A birthday would practically be a state occasion, and this knife isn't exactly a spur of the moment decision Juan made while walking through Costco. A lot of work and time went into it, so there has to be a trail. There's probably pictures and records of him giving it to his wife.

I would also think it probable that the government of Argentina would declare this knife to be a looted state treasure and demand that the U.S. hand it over. I don't think our government would move too quickly to do it, but where diplomacy and back room deals go, you never know.

My first thought with the Cuba/South America connection was absolutely Che Guevara. There were probably dozens of "freedom fighter" splinter groups in South America. I know that one of Che's roles in Cuba was meeting with different groups on that island and trying to unify them under Fidel. He was also a celebrity for the cause. They probably flocked to him for his blessings everywhere he went. I can imagine this being handed off to him to use it to further the cause or even just as an offering. However, The Virginian, post above, probably did his homework and I'm just full of hot air. However this goes, this is really interesting.

I also don't think I'd be too quick to sell it. This is the kind of thing that could go viral and cause a minor stir (somebody post this up on Reddit, hint, hint). It could make it worth a lot more than the asking price.
