Question for Bader III owners....

Guys,
I am thinking of ordering a new Bader soon (as a second grinder).
I have been thinking for a while now, that it might be possible to mount it on a hinges steel plate, and set it up to where it will flip over 90 degrees, onto its side, to then be used as a horizontal grinder.
Actually, the other day, I found out that Bader makes a hinges plate just for this purpose, so I know it can be done.
I am wondering if any of you guys have done this, and if so, could you share some details? Did you bolt it to your workbench? Do any of you have the fabricated Bader stand???
I would love some details on this, and pics would REALLY be awesome!
Thanks for any help guys.

I have a BIII but have not tried to use it as a horizontal as you are talking about. But this is my thinking on it. I have used Rinaldis KMG horizontal grinder many times. If you feel that you are in a position to need a horizontal grinder go with the didicated KMG. Double that as this would be your second grinder. There are alot of things you can do with that KMG that you would not be able to do with the BIII. If you only had one grinder I would say go with the angle plate, but if you are buying a second.........

I'm with RW on this one. I'm actually planning to have two grinders and the horizontal one - eventually. And if I were buying a second grinder it'd be the KMG-1. I think it's a sturdier machine and it's a few hundred dollars less. Just my 2c.

Oh, for what it's worth, Bader makes a horizontal attachment for the BIII. I've never used it and it looks kinda clumsy but that might be a good alternative. I would like to hear someone's assessment of it. :)

I'm marching in the same lineup as Dave and RW. I have a BIII and I think it's the bee's knees. In fact, I'll be buying a second one soon. They are a fine unit. But if I buy a horizontal grinder, I'll be getting Rob's unit. It's the nicest one I've seen.

A little something about Bader: Steve Bader passed away as many of you know. The company is now run buy a fellow names Dan Johnson. Great guy. I spoke with him on the phone a couple days ago. Bader prices are now in line with the KMGs... sorry Rob, I ashamedly just plugged the BIII's... but your KMGs are still damned good!

I have two veri speed B111's and I like them, you can see them in the shop tour sunfishforge.com they have 1 1/2 hp motors and just not strong enough for these big wide bowie blades I'm doing now, so I'm thinking about getting a KMG-1 and putting a 3 or 5 hp motor on it, three grinders should be enough :D Oh wait I also have an old Square Wheel grinder, 4 may be too many  I don't have much need for a horizonal grinder but if I did, I would want it set up and left that way, no changing back and forth. my .02 only.

Mr. Clark,
I assume you are speaking of Trace Rinaldi? I was under the impression that he used one of the $2k JL horizontal grinders.
I did not know he had a KMG.

Guys I think the KMG horizontal grinder is a nice unit, but I just wish it used the same belts as my BaderIII.
I have also never seen the "horizontal attachment" from Bader. Anywhere I can view this thing???
Thanks fellas...

Razor,

Is this the Bader attachment you are speaking of? I saw them here on Mr. McLurkin's site and thought this may be what you are referring to. Sure could be nice to use the same belts, even though I don't even have a vert. or horz. :( . Oh well one of these days!

I wonder how heavy this would be to lay over horizontal?

Also, that horz. unit by Rob IS very nice, too.

Hopefully this will help.

Hey? This is my first post here! I didn't realize it. Just want to say THANKS for sharing all the great info here by everyone. Been lurking for quite a while, so I guess I will need to jump in every so often. Thanks again.

I do use the JL horizontal as well as the verticle, and I really like them both.
The horizontal is fantastic.. I cant imagine not having it now. Its the one machine that improved my work overnight. It is $pendy at over $2K with variable speed, BUT it sure makes things nice.

Ron probably got cornfused, cause they sell em at K&G, you can order them straight from Johm Leblanc too..

Thanks Trace,
I'm interested in HOW important the variable speed is. In fact, this is something I was wondering about regular vertical grinders too.
I mean, are you changing speeds on that thing quite often? Yes, I know there are times, but I have always wondered if a single speed horizontal grinder would be a big regret or what? Don't have enough experience yet to make that call.
I did order my Bader III with variable speed, but I'm CONSIDERING a horizontal grinder with single speed. We'll see.
I know ONE thing. Hanging with you guys is gonna cost me $$$, variable speed or not...

Hey Razor,

A grinder without a variable speed is like a kitchen without a microwave oven. You can live without it, but once you have it, you kick yourself for not getting it sooner.

There are lots of reasons for having vari speed. I would not even consider a grinder without one.

On a horizontal, if for no other reason (and there are a lot of other reasons), the bearings onl the small wheels are not designed for running at full speed. So having a single speed grinder will wear out your bearings alot faster. At $35-$100 per wheel, replacing these can get pricey after awhile.

No problem bro,
I think I'm going to go with Rob Frinks.
I have decided there is no need to use the same belts as my 72" grinder, and the belts are MUCH cheaper too.
It is a nice system, and the price is right too.
REALLY wish I had the $$ for the JL like Mr. Rinaldi though!

Hey bud my name is Trace, PLEASE dont call me Mr. Rinaldi... ;) Whatever you get you will be glad you got a horizontal grinder, trust me..

Take Care
Trace..
