A buddy of mine offered to sell me 4 year old Benchmade CQC-7 in really good condition for about $100 , but I bargained him down to about $90.

Is this a good deal (I will inspect the knife of course) or should I rather save up for a brand new Emerson CQC-7 ?

Your thoughts and opinions please.....

ya dont have to save up i got my emeson CQC-7 w/plain black blade for 89.95 from onestopknifecenter.com

I was gonna say...

I think the new emerson CQC7's are widely available for 90-100 dollars.

The BM is generally considered better than the emerson version, but of course i have only heard BM people say this, not the general public so they are a bit biased.

The CQC7 was a hot knife for BM until Ernie Emerson split off and started his own production co. The QC was generally considered to be quite a bit better than current Emersons.

I would say it would be worth $90 if it's in good condition, i.e. no blade abuse or significant scratches. In some circles it has an element of collector value, if in mint condition.

Good luck.

Dick

Sounds like you are getting a good deal.

I have a friend who bought an Emerson CQC-7 last summer, and I wanted to compare it to the BM version, so I pulled out my NIB BM version, and side by side compared them.
the BM version has thicker scales, as well as thicker liners. The BM version locked up tighter, and the general QC is better.

Of course, i may be biased, but I think I'd go for the BM for $90 as long as it's in great shape. Emerson makes great knives, but I think he's still experiencing those 'growing pains' in his factory.

I could get an Emerson here for about $130 new, otherwise I could import.

However, I was specifically interested in this piece as it is a BM CQC7 in great condition.

The BM 970 and 975 series of knives were of decent quality and sturdy as well. The one recurrant problem was the quality of the liner lock. I had about a dozen of them at one time, so had a fairly good sample size.

Some were fine, some were mediocre, and some just plain terrible; they were sticky as heck. I found that there was little you could do to improve them. Even complete disassembly, polishing the tang / liner lock interface and lubing with a high quality lubricant (MoS2 worked best, I found) would at best move a terrible liner lock into the mediocre category. Be sure and check the lock action on the one you are anticipating buying. If the liner lock is sticky, it may well be that way forever. The liner locks are sturdy, however. I never had one that failed the spine whack test.

Some people reported problems with easy rusting with the bead blast finish, so keep the Tuf-Cloth handy.

Hope this helps. Walt

I got it! This knife is in MINT condition. I really think this was an excellent buy and it probably does have some collector value, well at least to me it does

I guarantee you will love that knife for as long as you have it

I've got several 970's & 975's, that series has always been my favorite. Many people used to give me slack for it, but those knives are just awesome !!
