Could any of you help me out by measuring the sharpened edge of the blade?

The reason I ask is that ,if I should purchase one, if the sharpened edge is 4" or over I'll need to carry fishing gear and hike near a body of water.:)

If it is under 4" ,like 3 15/16", I can carry it anywhere.

Yah I know...dumb laws.:grumpy:

The blade database would tell you here that the BK17 has a Blade length: 4.375 inches
Overall length: 9.25 inches.

Looks like you are going fishing.

Ahh..but is that scale to tip? My state only counts the "edged portion of the blade".

For instance, my F1, measured from the furthest point of the scale to tip would be illegal for anytime, anywhere carry. However the edged portion being just under 4" makes it legal for anytime, anywhere carry.

Dayhiker, I symphathize with your predicament. Do your local laws specify if the measurement must be ALONG the sharpened edge (a curve) or tip to rear in a straight line (shorter than the along-the-curve measurement).

That hasn't been specified in case law. However the one time I have had a blade checked the Trooper measured straight with the spine.

What state do you reside in ? My experience watching people "measure" a knife blade has been mixed. Some measure from the edge of the handle to the tip of the blade, including the short area between where the handle ends & the blade edge begins. Some actually measure the cutting edge---INCLUDING measuring around the curve. Measuring around the curve will always yield longer length. Some measure their palm from side-to-side & use that as a measure, which is bad because you can alter it by pushing against your hand with the handle of the knife, by a 1/4" or more. Bottom line is, different people will do it different ways. Thats the reality of it. Be under the "limit" to be sure. I know it sucks, but if i had a favorite knife that "was close", i would hesitate carrying it.

Connecticut.

I simply measure from the start of the edge to the tip in a straight line which I believe our Statute refers to. If a LEO wishes to measure the curve of the blade, and can find a prosecutor who agrees, well I guess I'll become a test case.

So anyone have a 17?

Looks like its a little over 4. As close as it is I would think about taking the tip down enough to be legal.

whew, I'm glad someone finally showed up with real data. Thanks, Mauser.

dayhiker, I'm across the border to the east, and we have a 3" limit. At least the state uses the ABS standard of tip-to-front-of-scales. If you want to be hiking in Pachaug or somewhere on the border, be aware. I've been TOLD (not verified, not entirely clear in the RI laws) that in RI you can carry a 3"+ blade as long as it's *not concealed*. So on a pack would be a good choice, but again - I haven't figured out a good way to verify that.

several years ago I ordered a CRKT M16 EDC because it was listed as a 3" blade. Turned out that measurement was the edge, and legally it was too long. I ground down the spine at the tip which made it a bit less pokey and actually more usable.

Turns out 3" is a ridiculously practical size - just wish I could go bigger on occasion... :(

(yeah, yeah, somebody's gonna .sig that)
