Have any of you gone camping on Long Island?
Is there any place where you can camp and not smell what the guy in the next tent had for lunch?
I have seen some campsites on Long Island that looked like a shanty town with each site on top of the next one.
What say ye?

Nice to see a fellow NY'er on the forum, ost of the LI campsights I've seen are similar to what you've described....I've heard some interesting things about campsights on some of the islands...Such as fire Island, and Shelter Island... I can't vouch for them however as it was friend of a friend type stuff.. For a quick getaway camping trip I much prefer Harriman State park They have lots of trails and campsights that are much more secluded...and it is only about a 60 mile drive from the city...Saw a Large Black Bear there while camping this past autumn.... Good luck

I'd consider Harriman. That isn't too far. I am thinking a Remington 870 loaded with slugs would be with me due to the possibility of meeting a bear.

Thanks for the tip.

Please don't shoot the bears ! Black bears are rarely a problem ,just don't feed them [yourself or other food ].You'll probably meet a feral person or feral dog that is a danger more often than a dangerous bear.

While I occassionally do see bears in relative proximity to the city While in Harriman....They have never been a problem have met a few unfriendly unleashed rottweilers however..When clost to the parking lots....Harriman is a great place if you can get a Topo map of it you'll see It's roughly just a 100 square miles of "rugged Appalachian" mountain and Forest ..There are several common areas w/ parking lots and picnic tables throughout, but they are mostly located around the larger lakes and Sheeple rarel ventur far from here....There is also a segment oth the A.T. that runs through the park...I've had a lot of fun there on day trips as well as extended campouts.. Good luck

If that's the case, the only ? I have about Long Island camping is......why bother? Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hither Hills on in Montauk is the closest you'll get brother, unless you sneak into Caumsett late one night. Head north! ;)

I'm not sure if fire arms arel allowed in harriman or not when there I usually don't bring one....although as always I feel a little bit naked with out it when I'm in the woods and there is a chance that I might run into people....If I was in the real wilderness (miles from civilization with no people around I'd feel better without a fire arm than in a more populated area...Does that make me crazy???I just don't feel that animals are anyway near as big a threat as people...That's just me though.
