Question for checkering file owners

I just recieved a checkering file in the mail. My understanding was the sides would be parallel to the checkering grooves on the file. Mine is not, eliminating the possibility of clamping a guide to a blade to checker a finger grip.

Is this normal? If it is, would I have to freehand? If it's not, should I exchange it for one that is?

Mine is parallel to the teeth,it's basically a rectangle.Don't know the brand .

The sides are already smooth, but if you eyeball down the edge, the grooves aren't parallel to the side. That's my question. Shouldn't they be if the sides are ground smooth?

Once you start filing with a checkering file, the teeth ride in their own grooves.
There's really no guide needed.
Unless I misunderstand your problem.
As long as the teeth are straight, you should have no difficulties.

I have several checkering files for gunsmithing and knife work. Some of them had sides that were not parallel to the teeth. I corrected this on my grinder. From what I have learned, this is not unusual. It is not a problem unless you want to use a jig to guide the file. In fact, the instructions on one checkering jig I saw said to grind the edge to make sure the edge and teeth were parallel. Just go slow so you don't over heat the file.

Hey fellas:

Thanks for the replies.

Chip: I can't believe a file manufacturer can't line up the teeth to the edge, but it is what it is. Thanks!
